Revisiting Tyler Smith G/T Tulsa

I think they still have a good amount of cap space, even before Collins comes off the books. I think they will be very active in that post draft FA period. I could see them add two or even three starterish type players after June 1

I so hope you’re right. And that’s there’s anything left by then.

My thing with Smith is…
-He won’t be the best guard available at 24
-There are other high potential OT’s you can get much later

Would be a great pick in the 2nd round but no way at 24

Have you seen him run block?

He will be best OG available and potential to play OT in near future e.g. Lael and LA.

That said, trade down 2 times then take him.

Cowboys can come away from this draft with both Travis Jones AND Tyler Smith this way.

I'm going to retract my statement on Smith after watching a little more and reading a little more.

If he can plug in and play LG with hopes that he can develop into an OT I think he's a good option. I'm still iffy at 24 but if the Scouts feel as good about him playing LG as they do about Green / Zion sign me up.

i think Kenyon Green is a better guard than Smith is as a guard, and Green's a better LT than Smith is as a LT.

I have googled for it and can't find the number again, but I believe that Green played 120 snaps at LT and only gave up one pressure. As it was, he only gave up 3 pressures in his final 7 games.

If he played LT for a whole season at that level, he's a top 10 pick. But because he kicked around to guard and also dominated there, we're talking if we want him at 24 or not.

Might be on par with Kenyon Green as a run blocker with zero technique. Needs work in pass protection, but that can be hidden better inside at Guard during his development. Has legitimate upside as a future blindside Left Tackle. This kid has gotten zero coaching on the college level, if Joe Philbin can turn Steele into a serviceable starter. what could he do with an elite trait athlete. Smith has to be in consideration with the likes of Zion and Green. Rumor has it the Titans are eyeing him at 26.
Don't have an opinion on the player, just know we need Olineman despertly.

very intrigued.
love to get him at 56...but its feeling like he won't be there.
i like these tulsa kids...
ot/og tyler smith.
ot/og chris paul.
wr josh johnson.
good players all.

He has zero technique and was winning with sheer physical ability. The hope is, if you can teach him how to play the right way, could be an elite player down the line. The question is, can he accept coaching, does he want to be great?
Thanks, hopefully they can interview him and determine coachability

I’ve only heard a few interviews with him, but he gives me the impression of a humble, thankful young man that wants to go good and be good.

You may want to tune into draft a little closer.
oh he will be overdrafted.Teams are desperate. That said, in the real world, he's a late rd guy. Some team will go nuts and draft him in rd 2. I just hope its not Dallas. I've watched him play alot. I live in Texas and get many Tulsa games etc. He's decent not great.

Careful. TS is a project guy. He's a gamble at 56. At 88? I am all in. He wont last til later.

The thing that worries me about Tyler Smith is all the penalty's. We just let a guy go because he was a penalty machine.

As a LT…could be wrong, but I don’t think penalties were an issue when he played inside. Symptom of a guy 1/2 a step too slow being asked to play LT in the SEC I would imagine

He was only a 1/2 step slow due to lack of technique.
- Physically he has terrific athleticism for a 324 pound player.
- He often didn't even have a kick-step on Pass Pro.
- At times he would step into the pass rusher similar to run blocking.
- Many of his penalties were due to pancaking defenders and landing on top of them.
- He has to learn 'good enough'. He wanted to dominate defenders on every snap.

The Cowboys have to consider him in the 1st.
- The upside is huge and even with his technique issues, I think as a rookie he is an upgrade at LG.
- If he had played OG only in college, I don't think there would be any questions about him as a 1st round pick.
- I actually think that he is a relatively safe pick as an OG.

His OL coach at Tulsa was young and inexperienced.

In an interview, he mentioned OL coach Brandon Hartston or Hartson; however, that must have been High School.
- The Cowboys had a long-snapper on the roster in the 2016 off-season named Brandon Hartson.

His OL coach at Tulsa was Zach Hanson. 2020 was his 1st time an an OL coach.
- He was TEs coach and assistant OL coach in 2018 with OU.
- Prior to that he was a Graduate Assistant for a few years.
