Going back and rewatching the game and trying to pay closer attention to individual play.

Just watched Seattle's first possession. Run defense was good, mainly because of good individual plays by Odighizuwa and Sam Williams. Osa blew up the first play by shoving the center back into the back. Williams held the edge and shook off his man to make the tackle on the other run. Mazi was pushed back on both of those plays, so not a good series for him.

In pass defense, noticed Kelvin Joseph did a nice job underneath on one route redirecting a receiver to the linebacker. Scott made a nice play to end the drive. Not bad for the second-team defense against Seattle's starting offense. Sam and Fowler, who we will be relying on as pass rushers, got a little push around the edges, but not enough to make Smith too uncomfortable but it was all quick passes.

Dallas' first drive:

1st and 10 -- Nine-yard run up middle by Dowdle. Richards absorbed the outside rush, but the DE pushed him back to gain some separation too late as the RB raced past. Hoffman and Farniok doubled the nose, allowing Farniok to push the NT to the left. Hoffman peeled off and filled the gap to stuff an LB. Ball mauled a DT turning him around and then peeled off to get the MLB, while Waletzko finished off the DT. Good blocking by Hendershot and Tolbert on the right side to wall it off.

2nd and 1 -- Three yards up middle by Dowdle. Richards locks up with DE to keep him to the outside. Hoffman and Farniok double the nose to get him turned and create a crease. Hoffman peels off to absorb an LB who slammed into him with a running start without giving ground, allowing Dowdle to be able to cut off those blocks. Ball and Waletzko initially double the other DT pushing him into the pile to give Dowdle space on that side. Waletzko peeled off to initially get on a linebacker, but the LB shook him off to make the tackle. The other tackler was the DE, whom Hendershot blocked but couldn't drive.

1st and 10 -- Cooper incomplete trying to throw to Hendershot after he released the end. Rush double-pumped and essentially threw it away because of the pass rush/defender in the lane. Everyone else was blocking down to the left and did their jobs OK. The other end swam around Richards, but fell down. Not sure anyone was at fault. Hendershot initially made his block and released like he was supposed to, and even if Rush had completed the pass, there were three defenders waiting on Hendershot. Seemed like a bad play call for the defensive alignment that Rush saw.

2nd and 10 -- Quick pass to Dowdle, lined up in slot, for 3 because of safety blitz. Richards clubs the end inside to stack him with the DT being blocked by Hoffman. (The DE went inside by design to keep the outside blitzer from being blocked.) Farniok and Ball set back side to side to give the other DT nowhere to go, so he also ended up in the stack. Waletzko had no one to block because the other DE dropped into coverage.

3rd and 7 -- Long completion to Tolbert. Richards picked up the stunt with some help from Dowdle to stymie the DT. Hoffman did a good job punching the DT first to slow him down while Richards held up the DE before passing him off to Hoffman. Farniok absorbed the other DE trying to loop through the middle. Ball passed the DT off to Waletzko trying to go around the outside and then set up to help Farniok but was not needed. Very good job of passing off defenders by the whole group. Hendershot deserves some credit for jamming the DE to slow him down and help the OL get set up.

1st and 10 -- Six-yard run off left tackle by Dowdle. We stack two tight ends and WR to that side and McKeon held up the end against a five-man front. Schoonmaker got outraced on the inside by an LB but the LB couldn't stop Dowdle from getting to the outside and got erased by Houston who was engaged in a block with a safety. Richards and Hoffman doubled a tackle and pushed him away from the play and into the NT who was being blocked by Farniok. Ball didn't really have to do much to the other DT but held his ground. Waletzko got inside the other DE to wall him off from trying to go to the other side and get in on the play.

2nd and 4 -- Rush incomplete on pass tipped by DL. Richards and Hoffman doubled the end, so he didn't get much push. Farniok pushed the DT wide of Rush, but was close enough that Rush might have felt the pressure. Ball didn't allow much push at all from the other DT. The main pressure came against Waletzko, who let the DE get his hands off him to work back inside after Waletzko gave ground on the outside rush and hit the ball as Rush was throwing (also hit Rush in the head, though).

3rd and 4 -- Rush sacked. Hoffman was beat off the snap and Rush had no chance. Richards gave some ground to the inside, but kept his man outside of the pocket. Farniok set up to help Ball, who didn't need any help with his man and didn't give much ground. Waletzko gave ground and when the DE tried to go inside of him again, kept his hands on him to keep him from getting to Rush. Hoffman just got destroyed around his left side by Jarran Reed; didn't slow him for a second.

On the long run by Charbonnet on Seattle's next possession, our line just got destroyed all the way around. Fowler got pinned to the outside and Mazi to the inside to create the lane. A guard led the way against Bell and Odighizuwa was getting ping-ponged around in the middle of the field.

We responded to that with really good outside penetration on the next play by Fowler to mess up a run. Then they threw a quick pass on the move for a few yards with pressure coming from Fowler and Williams. (Don't think they liked seeing Williams with a full head of steam and only a back to block him. Not sure what Seattle was thinking essentially having three linemen block one DT.) Williams then pressed the OT and essentially did to him what their DE did to Waletzko to get the sack.

Dallas' second drive:

1st and 10 -- Quick pass to Turpin for 6. DE got around Waletzko off snap and into the passing lane, but Rush threw over him. Rest of line was blocking down to right, including Hendershot on the left side and didn't really allow any penetration on a designed quick throw.

2nd and 4 -- Pass batted down by DE who raced around Waletzko. Other four linemen doubled the two tackles. McKeon got driven back some by the other DE, but held his ground enough and got some double help from Hendershot when the LB he was blocking dropped into the flat.

3rd and 4 -- Quick slant to Tolbert. Waletzko and Richards each walled off their ends to keep the pocket. Ball gave some ground to the DT, but the quick throw kept him from being a factor. Farniok stopped the middle blitzer cold. Hoffman didn't have much trouble with the other DT. And Davis picked up the other blitzer well enough.

1st and 10 -- Quick TE screen to Hendershot for 7. All the linemen blocked down to the right and kind of just caved it all together. The DE was left unblocked as Hendershot released and the DE was left in no man's land.

2nd and 3 -- Davis up the middle for about 7. Richards keeps his man to the outside. Hoffman doubles the DT, allowing Farniok to wall him to the left side and Hoffman to peel off and stop a LB trying to get through. Ball and Waletzko absolutely bury the other DT, putting him on skates and then into the ground. Hendershot holds up the DE enough so that he's not able to get in on the play until Davis has enough for the first down. Davis deserves credit for running through an unblocked linebacker.

1st and 10 -- Davis 2-yard gain while trying to run to the left side of the blocking. Richards failed to pin his man, a DT, to the inside with the line blocking down to the right. Hendershot didn't get the DE walled off, either, so if the DT had not made the play, the DE probably would have. The rest of the line blocked down well enough for the play to work. It should be noted that Schoonmaker had an outside block on the opposite side but allowed the DE to punch and shed him and probably would have made the play if the others had not.

2nd and 8 -- Draw to Davis for 4 yards. Blitzing DB made the tackle. Richards kept his man walled outside. Hoffman absorbed a hit to maintain position to the inside as well to create a crease. Not a great block but enough in this case. Farniok and Ball doubled to make the other DT give some ground but he anchored down to eventually clog the middle and keep Farniok from peeling off in time to clear a LB. Waletzko rode the DT charging inside to the ground, causing Davis to have to step around him.

3rd and 4 -- Incomplete pass by Rush on low throw due to pressure. Waletzko's DE pushed inside of him to get Rush to leave the pocket. That allowed time for Richards' DE to loop him for some pressure, but the pressure that rushed the throw was from the DT going around Ball. Not Ball's fault, though because he kept the DT to the outside, but Rush moved there because of the inside pressure. Waletzko did a good job reestablishing himself after initially giving up the inside, but Rush abandoned the pocket because of that initial push. Hoffman held up his man well enough, and Farniok had no one to block. This was the throw to Tolbert that was reverse because the nose of the ball hit the ground. Waletzko went out after this play but appeared to have hurt his shoulder several plays earlier.

4th and 4 -- First-down throw to Brooks. Richards set up deep between the DE and Rush and stopped his rush. Hoffman carried the DT inside and into Farniok, who was helping Ball block the other DT, who then tried to go around the stack late. Taylor pushed the other DE wide. Hoffman's DT did squeeze through for some late pressure.

1st and 10 -- Dowdle up the middle for 4. Taylor and Ball put the DT on skates and then buried him. Farniok initially pushes back the other DT, but he sheds to get in on the tackle. Hoffman pulls to hook the DE. Richards pins the other DE outside. No one cleared the LB out of the hole. May have been McKeon's responsibility but the DE beat him off the snap and caused him to stay with him until Hoffman picked the DE up on the pull.

2nd and 6 -- Dropped pass by Tolbert. Taylor got in position to stop the outside rush by the DE. Richards and Hoffman stuffed the other DE. Ball got swam past but then took the DT's legs out from under him to knock him to the ground. Farniok with a quick initial help from Hoffman held up the other DT, who shook Farniok too late to get pressure.

3rd and 6 -- First down to Turpin. Dowdle did a good job of picking up the outside blitzer. Taylor's man got inside of him fairly quickly, but it was a quick pass. Richards absorbed his man with some help from Hoffman. Farniok and Ball kept the two DTs from getting much of a push.

1st and 10 -- Dowdle up the middle for 2. Richards released upfield to stuff a LB. Hoffman took the DE and kept him to the outside. Farniok failed to move the NT, who made the tackle. Ball and Taylor doubled the other DT and turned him around. Hendershot lost to the DE who shoved him to the inside and then off of him to get in on the tackle.

2nd and 8 -- Dowdle for 3 more up middle. Richards hooked the DE. Hoffman and Farniok doubled a DT and drove him to the left. Ball pushed the other DT to the left then peeled to get a hat on a LB. Taylor went upfield to block a LB, but left the DE unblocked (by design?) and he came down the line to make the play.

3rd and 5 -- Pass to Tolbert for first down. Richards and Hoffman got beat quickly as the end split them so it was a good thing it was a quick throw. It looked like Richards' fault as he allowed the DE to rip around him before Hoffman was in position to help. Farniok and Ball didn't give much ground to the two DTs. Taylor set up deep and walled off the other DE.

1st and goal -- Dowdle 2 yards up middle. Richards walled off the end. Hoffman initially had a LB blocked but he came around him and made the tackle. Farniok failed to get any movement on the DT. Ball and Taylor got a little late on the double. Hendershot got blown up by the DE and thrown into Dowdle's path, which forced him to stutter-step and helped the LB catch him from behind.

2nd and goal -- Pass to Dowdle in the flat for TD. Richards absorbed punch by DE to maintain position on quick throw. Hoffman, Farniok and Ball formed wall in front of two DTs, and didn't allow one to loop it. Taylor pushed the other DE wide.

Thank you, six hours for the whole game?

Did the running backs look good in pass protection?

Thank you again!

I didn't see any problems with their pass protection on those two drives. Didn't get any further, though. I probably spent close to three hours just watching through our second possession (which ended with 11 minutes still left in the second quarter).

Just wanted to actually review the OL play instead of being like so many who just want to conclude that this or that player sucks based on one play or a couple of plays or maybe even something they were blamed for that wasn't actually their fault.

Your dedication to this team is without question.

I'm a bit lazy. I'll let the coaches tell me who makes the team.

I always go back, and dissect it myself. I mean nothing else to do , until the season starts

Just from those couple of offensive drives, though, I would say that Richards and Ball played the best out of the linemen. Farniok wasn't bad, either. Hoffman struggled some and Waletzko struggled the most.
Thank you, bro. Great breakdown. Pretty much how I saw it. Truly appreciate your hard work. Good to see Ball, Farniok and Richards play well to start the game against Seattle's #1s.

I see you picked up on the TE staying in more often to help on pass protection. I thought that was the case but I am glad to see it in a breakdown.

I like the idea of mixing up the protections. The RB were in that mix too but at least now they cannot just zero in on who to cover and who to attack in pass rush.

I salute you for your dedication to task. I’d get through a series at best, then start noticing the holds, the lining offsides and by the half, i’d discover I turned it into a critique on the refs and announcers.

There's just so much I miss the first time around, and a lot of wrong conclusions are drawn. Based on a lot of the posts on here, I'm not the only one who sees it wrong initially because you're too busy taking in the whole play to notice the individual performances unless that's all you are focusing on. I don't like speculating on play right after watching a game because you usually get a lot of knee-jerk reactions. Sometimes they are right; most of the time they miss the mark or at least don't tell the whole story.

It was easy to see, though, from the initial watch that Hoffman and Waletzko did not play well. They stood out like sore thumbs.

And we didn't play Ferguson in this one, so it was all on Hendershot and Schoonmaker against Seattle's 1s. It was a bit hit and miss.

I think it is interesting where we are lining up the running back for pass protection, a yard or two behind the guard. I expect we'll eventually run a quick draw out of that formation to keep the defense honest.

My wife didn't care for me ignoring her for a few hours while I dissected the drives. I'll have to make that up to her.

It's OK, she was probably gone find something to be mad about anyway. At least you earned this one.
