Rice vs. Moss

Jerry Rice is without question the greatest not only wideout, but player of alltime. Randy was more talented, but Jerry was clearly more consistent and productive.

I don't think many will agree with you.
:laugh2: I know this. I just think Moss vs. Rice is a really fun discussion.

While I agree that Rice is the greatest wide receiver of all time, I don't think he is the greatest player of all time. He is easily in he discussion of greatest players, but I think several other players are in that discussion as well. And I think some of them are greater than Rice.

Moss is not the greatest wide receiver. I don't think he is even close.

Moss was the most talented WR of all time. He may be the most talented football player of all time. He was a physical marvel the likes of Deion Sanders and Barry Sanders.

Rice was obviously the more reliable WR.

I'm all about giving Rice his proper praise and putting him in a special wing of the hall of fame but one thing that is rarely talked about with him is the offense he was in and the QBs he played with. He would not have anywhere near the numbers he has if he'd have played in Dallas with Troy and Emmitt.

So if you want to call him the greatest WR ever, that's fine with me. But I do think his numbers are a little inflated.

If Moss came to play every game, he would have been hands down better than Jerry Rice. He came up short because of his brain.

I agree that his numbers are a little inflated, but his numbers aren't what made him great. He was great and the numbers are just a byproduct. Even if you reduce his numbers by 20%, which is a pretty large chunk he would still be the all time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

It is possible I suppose. The brain is probably one of the biggest components to being one of the all time greats.

Well, let's put it this way - if I had ONE game to win and I knew for certain that both were going to bring 100% effort to the game?

I'd take Randy Moss every time.

That is a pretty large disclaimer. Based on history there is no reason to be certain that Moss would bring 100% effort to the game.

I agree with most of your takes but I don't agree with this argument.

You can't penalize guys for the offensive schemes they played in. Rice/Montana, Rice/Young, Rice/Bono, Rice/Garcia all ran it and ran it with success. It took precision route running and timing.

Rice also played in other offenses with the Raiders and Seahawks and found success....at an old age too.

Irvin put up 100 reception seasons just as Rice did. In fact, there were a bunch of receivers during that time that were putting up huge numbers (Haywood Jefferies, Harold Moore, Cris Carter, et cetera). Rice was just more prolific. Irvin has said as much in interviews before regarding Rice.

Jerry Rice is not only the greatest WR to play the game he may indeed be the best player to ever play pro football. Any thoughts otherwise IMHO is just crazy.

I agree.

Now that both have retired.

Jerry Rice all the way.

Moss had a chance.

Moss certainly had better physical gifts though. He just didn't have the mental aspect of it in the long run.

There's still something to be said about Moss though. The 2 highest scoring teams of all time (in a season) have Moss in common.

Randy Moss did things physically that Rice could only dream of doing. Saying Moss is better is not crazy.

I think the best thing about this debate is how people define "good." Rice was more productive, but wasn't a better player

Uhhh...no. Rice is without question the best WR of all time. Randy never could hold Jerry's jock.

And for my money Rice is the best player, any position, I've ever seen in my entire life.
