I honestly loved the pick, nothing really lost but alot to be gained. The draft could be epic with the ceilings on Smith and Rico.

He was always a developmental pick. But out of 6th round players, his potential is probably higher than most. There simply isn't many guys his size and with his athleticism in the league. He just needs to adjust to football, and no, I'm not trying to downplay that. But we have seen in recent years TEs transitioning from basketball to tight end. I don't even think he'll be fully ready next year, I say he's a 2 year project with hopes of starting or getting meaningful reps in 2018.

Wow.

Rico was the worst player in a preseason game I've ever witnessed. Just awful. It's like they went out and found a 6-6 Siberian who'd never seen a game before and suited him up.

I said it at the time, we likely had a "deal" in place for him to stay here on the PS

hmmm but some complained about getting Dak in the 4th and not another QB. Wonder how you can see Dak as the future, which I do also, but can't give Rico a year to develop? We have Witten in place this year so we don't have rush him, we actually have the luxury of developing him. I do agree if he hasn't shown "any" progress by the end of the year, then yeah think about moving on.

We need to start preparing for life after Witten. And sooner rather than later

Witten has a $12M cap figure next year, the last year of his deal. I can absolutely see a Demarcus Ware situation on the horizon in regards to Witten either taking a pay cut or getting let go a year early. We're only two games in, but it sure looks like his blocking has declined to the point of being a liability.

I can picture Romo and Witten at the podium announcing their retirement at the same time.

The base salary is 7.4 so if they want to get the cap figure down it would likely be a short extension to spread the hit out further.

That contract will ensure he likely stays in Dallas on the PS. But...how much of a commodity is he overseas in hoops? He's not making the same money as he is currently. Or rather...I doubt it.

Because he could always bolt for basketball, DAL had to agree to give Rico the same money for being on the 53 while he is on the Practice Squad......450k vs 117k

I read a recent article ( cant find it now) that said the Patriots had a practice of paying there PS players far more than the minimum, to induce them to stay on the roster and let the Pats stash them away. I imagine we are paying Rico so much so that we keep him and not have to release a player and bring him up to protect from another team trying to sign him away.

Yea..I dont think that's the reason. Basketball isn't an option for him, at least not in the US. Nobody in their right mind chooses NFL over NBA money.
