I don't understand this thinking. Some of you act like because it was a comp pick, it's okay to throw it away on a high risk flyer. It is still draft capital owned by the team. It was earned because we lost more talent than we added in free agency this past year. Why would anyone thing it's okay to throw it away. How about taking a flyer on Jalen Mills or Charone Peake at that spot? Those are two pretty good FOOTBALL players at positions where the team could use some help. Those are guys that could actually make the team and contribute. I don't see any way they keep Gathers on the 53. If they do, they have to go with 4 TEs and go short somewhere else. I'd just rather they pick football players that have a path to make the roster with every pick they get their hands on. No draft pick is worth throwing away in my opinion.

Look at the Cowboy's late round picks for the last 4 years. They all have pretty much stunk. We do better with Free Agents is seems. At least this fellow is an upper echelon physical specimen.

Heard Mills was red flagged because he beat up his girlfriend. She had to get stiches. Who knows. I liked him as well, but there must be something to make him fall to the 7th.

It's true, they talked about it on the dc.com coverage.

Good project to have. Witten is going nowhere and will continue to get all the targets for at least another 2-3 years. Hopefully we can stash Rico as he develops so that he'll show enough to be in the mix once Witten's career starts to reach the end.

I have no problem with the pick, he can be the red zone weapon we thought Escobar was going to be.

Long term that would be the situation, but what about the short term? Do we coach him up during the off season, expose him to waivers and watch some other team who has a lack of talent snag him in waivers or sign him to their 53 man roster? What good does that do us?

Um, this applies to any player you pick that isn't a sure fire 53 man roster guy. You make your pick, try to get him ready to help your team...that is all you can do.

"Rico Gathers had 292 offensive rebounds the last 2 seasons for Baylor, more than any other major conference player."

This dude was a rebound machine, I like the pick. If we can develop him, he could turn into a pretty nice red zone weapon. Plus, he was a 6th round pick. Those are always stretches to even make the roster, none the less produce.

Yes, but I'm going to hate seeing him standing there waiting for the rebound while a defensive back makes the interception and takes it the other way.

Antonio Gates managed to start 11 games and catch 24 passes as a rookie. Unlikely to happen with Gathers but dbs will likely have a difficult time covering him.

Yes, but when he starts trying to dribble the football, they'll just be able to pick up the fumble.

See Jimmy Graham (yes, played football at the end of his college career), Julius Peppers, Antonio Gates, Martellus Bennett & Julius Thomas. Yes, the pick was a reach but he's an 'athlete'. I like his chances and will be pulling for him.

Those guys either actually played at least one year of college football (Graham, Peppers, Bennett, Thomas) or were undrafted (Gates).

Although I have zero problem with taking Gathers in the late 6th. Rather take him than someone like Caleb McSurdy who has zero potential.

DBs won't have trouble covering someone who can't even run a route precisely yet. Sure, he's tall, but that's about it.

Terrible pick. I've said it a million times, trying to get an Antonio Gates means getting a player that was an All-State player in Michigan his senior year. Gates was risky, but he wasn't just some basketball player that didn't have any real football experience that made the transition. He was a great HS football player that took 4 years off and then came back to the NFL with an understanding of the game and the rigors of the game.

Really...worst draft ever.

At worst he will be Antonio Gates.

Dude!!!....yo Tunsil !!!....pass that mask.

Didn't need a raw CB that could be a gunner and maybe an eventual nickel DB.
Didn't need a WR to push Street and Whitehead, possibly win a KR/PR job.
Didn't need an INT OL who could fight his way up the depth chart if injuries hit in camp.

As long as Witten is in Dallas, Rico won't see the field much. I don't blame Escobar for the coaching staff's screwups. They refuse to develop or play any TE other then Witten. It has resulted in wasted resources and they still don't have a good backup TE.

We ended up with Prescott, Frazier, Jackson and Gathers with those comp picks.

I agree to a certain extent but really the only guy that showed ability was Bennett and he was his own worst enemy while here....and it has continued everywhere else he has gone. He has put up good numbers in several other places but none of them keep him.

Rico can be the jump ball guy in the end zone, we have tried it some with Escobar with limited results. With Rico's size he can also be a short yardage TE if he shows any blocking ability at all...with a threat of being able to go out for a pass.

1. They drafted CB Anthony Brown earlier in that round.
2. They have 2015 4th Vince Mayle and free agents Ed Eagan, Chris Brown, Andy Jones.
3. Ted Karras, Donovan Clark, Vadal Alexander, Austin Blythe have about as much chance as UDFAs Jake Brendel & Boston Stiverson.

Rico was picked with the 6th because Dallas didn't want to fight for him with other teams. Stephen said so in their presser.
