Rico Gathers TE Baylor

Good project to have. Witten is going nowhere and will continue to get all the targets for at least another 2-3 years. Hopefully we can stash Rico as he develops so that he'll show enough to be in the mix once Witten's career starts to reach the end.

I love Witten but those 3rd down and five situations with Witten running 4 yard routes just kills me. Witten can't is terrible at the YAC.

High risk, high reward pick.

Like any player taking up football for the first time there is at least a 50% chance that he will not be able to take a hit/handle the contact.

I remember from my own playing days my team (minor league stuff) trying to convert a college basketball player to TE. Seemed like he had all the skills necessary. Never worked out - throwing/catching angles are very different from basketball. I guess some can't handle the transition. However this player ended up being a dominant pass rushing DE until injury shortened his football career. Speed and upper body strength were perfect for DE.

High risk is a first or second round player.

A sixth rounder. Doubtful.

Rico was picked with the 6th because Dallas didn't want to fight for him with other teams. Stephen said so in their presser.

Is basketball players in that big of a demand in the NFL draft?

Yeah and I disagree with the approach. If you listen to them talk they seem to think the draft ends after round 5 and then you start focusing on guys who might be tough signs in free agency.

How about, like, draftable talent first?

Look at the Cowboy's late round picks for the last 4 years. They all have pretty much stunk. We do better with Free Agents is seems. At least this fellow is an upper echelon physical specimen.

Well here's our 3rd day this year....

4(101) Charles Tapper DE Oklahoma
4(135) Dak Prescott QB Mississippi St.
6(189) Anthony Brown CB Purdue
6(212) Kavon Frazier S Central Michigan
6(216) Darius Jackson RB Eastern Michigan
6(217) Rico Gathers TE Baylor

Should we expect better from this group?

Where was that strategy with Thomas Rawls last year?

They valued Laurence Gibson more?

Actually they were so worried about not being able to sign Geoff Swaim (and his 13 career catches) in UDFA that they traded a 2016 6th for a late 7th in order to select Swaim.

Tapper's athleticism intrigues me.
Darius Jackson was a sneaky good pick but still a curious one after drafting Zeke.
Gathers intrigues me as well but I think I would have risked it and tried to land him in UDFA.

Prescott, Brown, and Frazier feel like our usual Day 3 wasted picks.

I think Tapper will be one of our better 3rd day picks. Prescott is a waste. I have hope for Brown and Frazier. Particularly Frazier, who Scouts Inc.'s Kevin Weidl calls one of the most underrated safeties in this class. I doubt Jackson makes the team considering the depth chart. I really hope he does though. Gathers seems like a complete waste of a pick. Sign the guy in UDFA. If you lose him, you still got Swaim. Don't be greedy.

The Rico pick is that risk/reward philosophy thing.
Except not a lot of risk. I like it

If you listen to either of the Jones boys every pick they make was just in the nick of time because someone else was going to take the player if they didn't. This just falls in line with another one of these fishing stories.

Funny how a 1st round talent like Collins can't get the "draft to avoid competition" treatment, but a guy who's just an athlete can.

Hey believe whatever you want to believe. Just passing on what the FO said about the pick.

Escobar isn't a red zone weapon any more? Why not?

Are you serious? He hasn't done anything since he has been here and now will be coming off an Achilles injury. That ship has sailed, he won't get a second contract here.

Rawls was a character risk. Stole a woman's purse at a casino. Less teams were interested in him. There were 27 teams at Gather's workout.
