Why not? How about because he isn't on the roster and in order for him to play, you have to cut a player that has actually earned their roster spot. No thanks. He can play when he has earned it.

Problem is we have about seven starters out today, so they will be all of the inactive players. Throw in that all 3 quarterbacks are playing. We need all hands on deck today

Oh. Thanks for chiming in Cowboys insider. I wasn't aware that Rico has clearly not earned anything. I'm sure everyone will appreciate your inside scoop.

Is he on the roster? Enough said. With their struggles at TE behind Witten, if Rico was even close to ready, he'd be on the roster. Who do you propose to cut right before the playoffs begin so that a project player can get a few snaps in a meaningless game? Yeah that sounds like a real smart move!

It would be really really nice to see him active today. Let the guy get some game time in. Why not?? Put him in with butt fumbler & see how he pans out. That would be so sweet.

I'd enjoy very much seeing that happen as well, although I can help but doubt it'll to come to pass.

At least, he should most likely be in house next year to develop further and see some action then.

Yeah. It won't happen but it should. It sure would be nice to see what he can do before next year vs running some of our other trolls back out there. (Like the two I just named above)

Another Rico thread! Count me in, and screw the logic. I too would love to see our experiment out there making plays. No need to explain as to why thats not possible, because I dont care lol. Just want to see my man out there crashing the glass pulling down tds from 11 feet in the air.

Exactly. Screw logic. We're all locked into the best possible playoff scenario and this game matters to no one. It would have been the perfect time to throw him a bone.

Man Ive said it before, we need a Tyreek Hill on this offense. A legit burner that can actually play football would make this offense even more of a nightmare to defend. Id be thrilled to sign Prior this offseason. What a combo him and Dez would be.

They would have to cut a player to add him. It's not just a matter of making him active for 1 game (i. e. Being on the 46 man game day roster).

I'm sure there's a reason why the FO has seen fit to award him an active TEs pay even though he's not active. Broaddus recently put out an article that indicated Gathers is making steady and quite impressive progress lately. If so, next year's training camp should prove interesting in that respect. He might be extremely raw at this juncture but evidently, that upside is still fully intact. I haven't given up on him by a longshot.

They pay him as an active player hoping he will refuse to sign with another team. It probably was part of the deal when they gave him the full pay.

Nice. Go into the playoffs without your best return man and with less CB depth even though Mo is a question mark and Brown is coming off a concussion. Very shrewd decision making. Too bad Jerry never hired you and put you in charge of the roster.

Extremely difficult to say what that contract might include without actually seeing it. The fact that they've made such a rare exception to the norm surely means that they value him considerably. I certainly haven't seen anything to indicate he's not earning his keep. In any case, it's early yet.

This may go down as a historical draft class for us. One draft like this can go a long ways towards changing the entire future of the franchise. I mean wow, to land a franchise qb is in itself a monumental win but to also add the best RB in the league, a probowl CB, DT and the best LB in the league all in the same class is flat out unbelievable. Then you top it off with the next Antonio Gates. Disclaimer: all of the preceeding was said without a doubt while wearing the roseiest of rose colored glasses. Seriously though in the 26 years Ive loved this team I can not remember a rookie class being so collectively productive.

It's obvious they feared another team poaching him based on future potential. Paying him like he was an active player has to be tied in some way to their desire to make sure he stays with them. I suspect they had a deal in place that they would pay him like he made the roster and he would refuse to sign elsewhere. That would also explain why they haven't felt the need to more him to the roster to keep him. I'm sure he is improving and deserves to be kept around but if he had earned a roster spot and playing time, he'd already be there doing that. We all know they could use some help at TE.
