If we activate him, someone gets waived.

If we need the roster spot back he gets waived.

Players with less than 4 seasons have no choice off waivers - have to go if claimed by another team.

Net result, based on recent waivers, is we lose 2 players.

It would be really really nice to see him active today. Let the guy get some game time in. Why not?? Put him in with butt fumbler & see how he pans out. That would be so sweet.

you'll have plenty of time to see what Gathers can do, in training camp and preseason games next season..

This may go down as a historical draft class for us. One draft like this can go a long ways towards changing the entire future of the franchise. I mean wow, to land a franchise qb is in itself a monumental win but to also add the best RB in the league, a probowl CB, DT and the best LB in the league all in the same class is flat out unbelievable. Then you top it off with the next Antonio Gates. Disclaimer: all of the preceeding was said without a doubt while wearing the roseiest of rose colored glasses. Seriously though in the 26 years Ive loved this team I can not remember a rookie class being so collectively productive.

If Rico simply turns out to be anything remotely resembling Antonio Gates we'd be doing ourselves proud. Of course, the likelihood may not be great but realistically, he's merely in his infancy in terms of his eventual development. This current staff is doing a yeoman's job of finding and acquiring talent -- no doubt about it. Whether Gathers sees exposure at all in the future remains to be seen but I'm certainly willing to wait and find out before casting any premature judgment upon his abilities. Next year, I'm reasonably confident that he'll be afforded the opportunity to demonstrate what he can and/or cannot do. I also won't be surprised if Rico has rookie competition in TC next year to vie for a TE spot.

It's obvious they feared another team poaching him based on future potential. Paying him like he was an active player has to be tied in some way to their desire to make sure he stays with them. I suspect they had a deal in place that they would pay him like he made the roster and he would refuse to sign elsewhere. That would also explain why they haven't felt the need to more him to the roster to keep him. I'm sure he is improving and deserves to be kept around but if he had earned a roster spot and playing time, he'd already be there doing that. We all know they could use some help at TE.

It's no secret that he lacks experience and needs time to develop. I fully understand why the FO is paying him what they are and wouldn't presume to argue that it's not because they don't want another team to take him away from them. That much is more than obvious. He'll certainly get his opportunity to compete for a position next year, I'm sure. I'm also sure we're both aware that only time will tell what his future holds in store.

I'd like to see more of him playing TE, I just don't know if I want him to see action today, what if he misses a block and Romo's carrier is over? I know Tony is going to move on, but I like the guy and don't think it's fair to do that to him...let him try to get on the active roster next year. Just my opinion.

no, but I'd like to keep everyone healthy today, we have something special...I say let it be until we have to. Sanchez is the best 3rd string qb I can think of. Yeah he played like crap the last few years, I guess we can always dial 1-800-quarterback if God forbid something happens. Good luck finding any veteran qb that's won in the NFL this time of year.
