What a tremendous DLman he was. Sad to hear of his kidney failure / rapid deterioration / dementia...then dying today.

RIP, and condolences to his family.

Thought I might follow up with a link. Saw it originally on twitter.

Ex-NFL star, actor Alex Karras dies

Former NFL player and actor Alex Karras died Wednesday in Los Angeles, a family spokesman said. He was 77.

"After a heroic fight with kidney disease, heart disease, dementia and for the last two years, stomach cancer," Karras died at his home, surrounded by family, the spokesman said.

Karras, a defensive lineman and four-time Pro Bowl selection who played for the Detroit Lions from 1958 to 1970, went on to star in the 1980s sitcom “Webster” and also played the horse-punching Mongo in the 1974 movie “Blazing Saddles."

I'll always remember some folks describing him as a "dirtry player" and him laughing about it. He did not take himself seriously and his depiction of Mongo in blazing Saddles was great fun. Rest in Peace, Mr Karras.

Just a few minutes ago.

RIP Mongo.

I didn't see the thread in the NFL Zone. Merge or delete.

He was also great as the Sheriff in Porky's... and surprisingly good in Victor/Victoria...

RIP Mongo...

Well, that's not welcome news. Alex Karros Professional Football Player (Detroit Linons), Professional Wrestler and Actor (Mongo ~ Blazing Saddles and Webster among other roles).

Rest In Peace Alexander George Karros.

Sad to see him go. He was old school. One tuff son of a gun, too. Lombardi loved/hated him.

Karras is one of many great players that never got near a ring. He only had one playoff game- the 5-0 loss to the Boys in 1970.

That was his last game by the way- he was cut before the next camp.
