************* ..... RIP Dandy Don ..... *************

Wish I was alive back then to see him play. I've always heard that he was the most charismatic and confident Dallas QB in team history. RIP Dandy Don.

Never saw him play, was before my time, but I know how much people loved the guy...RIP. Sounds like everything we want our sports heroes to be.

Truly sad here.

He was one of the main reasons I became a Cowboys fan as a kid.

Singing in the huddle...patting the ball in that unique way before tossing bombs to Bob Hayes....

He got a raw deal from the fans and the team...especially given that he was as tough as nails and played through some serious pain

RIP Dandy Don....

God's peace be with you, Don. And with your family, too.

Sad end to such a colorful personality.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but my favorite Meredith story (aside from dubbing Walt Garrison "Lil Puddin"") was a time when the team was returning from a road game, and they were flying in a hellacious storm. The plane went through a lot of turbulence, and then took a huge drop in altitude. Players were puking. Bob Lilly, who had polished off nearly a case of beer, said out loud, "It's over, we're done for." Pete Gent looked at Meredith, scared out of his wits, and said, "Joe Don, this is the end."

Meredith took a draw off of a cigarette, and said calmly, "Well, it's been a good un."

RIP

You had a great ride Cowboy, now you may rest....:starspin

...but I know Monday Night Football was never the same when he left.

He and Howard WERE the show....

I think it speaks volumes that they have been unable to achieve the same level of success with all any broadcast team since that era (on MNF) -- but, of course, those guys were the best of the best.

I consider myself lucky to have witnessed those days.

Growing up, my father was a die-hard Commanders fan (yes, things got a little tense from time-to-time) but he would always say that Meredith was the best quarterback that Dallas ever had -- even during the Superbowl runs in the mid-90's.

(I remember talking about how great Troy was and he'd say - He's no Meredith....)

He must have been something special on the football field.

This one really hurts. At least it was quick. But still hurts a lot. The only Cowboy death that hurt more was The Coach. 72 is not that old either. WOw this just really hurts.

I am old enough to remember watching Don play,in college and in the Cotton Bowl for the Cowboys. He,and #74,will always share the title "Mr. Cowboy" in my mind.
