ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Don Meredith, one of the most recognizable figures of the early Dallas Cowboys and an original member of ABC's Monday Night Football broadcast team, died Sunday. He was 72.

Meredith's wife, Susan, told The Associated Press on Monday her husband died in Santa Fe after suffering a brain hemorrhage and lapsing into a coma. She and her daughter were at Meredith's side when he died.

The original Cowboy
History shows that Bob Lilly was the first player drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, but in fact it was Don Meredith who was the original Cowboy, Gil Brandt says. Meredith through the years "He was the best there was," she said, describing him as kind, warm and funny. "We lost a good one."

excellent video tribute. thanks

i cried like a baby when they lost those 2 games to the packers.
cried some more when they lost to cleveland.
cried in disbelief and sadness when he announced his retirement.

40 some odd years later it is no surprise that tears flow again upon hearing of his death.

thanks for posting all the videos of and about Dandy Don, i really appreciate it.

RIP #17

My Dad's favorite player. RIP Dandy Don.
Don Meredith was my first HERO. I imprinted on him and the Dallas Cowboys as a boy living in Dallas. I have never looked up to any player more than Dandy. The man was a unique personality and a great competitor. He got beat up badly and never, never quit. He could not get us over the hump with Green Bay on consecutive title games but it was never Don's play that cost us the wins.

I bought only one Cowboys memorabilia this year. A no. 17 Meredith jersey that I wore proudly at the Cowboys v. Commanders opener this year in Washington. If Don had been our QB in that game we would have won by 21.

Rest In Peace, Dandy Don, the party is over

"99 yards....and a half!!"

They just played a clip of him singing "Turn out the lights" on the newsbreak. Listening to him on the Dorsett run still gives me a chill.

People who never got to hear him and Cossell on MNF have been shortchanged.

Great vid.

And as many times as I've seen that miracle Stabler throw to beat the Dolphins, I never realized that was Don with Gowdy saying "He caught it, he caught it!". How many others didn't, either?

Good stuff.

Same age as my mom and died on her birthday. RIP, Dandy Don.

A great loss for this organization. A true legend.

God speed.
