And all he was doing was his job that day.... helping protect a group of protestors' right to free speech.

not just the right to free speech, but actually protesting and rallying against him and his fellow officers for not caring about them.....the ultimate irony

running towards imminent danger to protect the people marching against you

They weren't marching against the Police, they were marching against Police brutality. DPD is one of the better in the nation. Some were even posing for pics with protesters in solidarity before this shooting.

There's a story that goes with that Witten photo.

Ben and Skin (The Fan) told it something like this.

About a year ago, Witten and other Cowboys were at some sort of function (for police groups , I think..not sure).

Witten was talking to Skin Wade and said he just had to meet this officer that he was talking to named Patrick Zamarippa. They said Witten was almost in tears but telling them they had to hear this story.
So they asked Officer Zamarippa if he'd tell it. He was pumped when he heard who he was talking to and said he was a regular listener...so they thought that was fun too. And, of course, he was a huge Cowboys fan.

Anyway, Zamarippa said two weeks earlier he had come very close to losing his life. He and his partner were on a scene that badly escalated against them to where they were overwhelmed. He said he was high up on balcony and was getting ready to get thrown over the rail to his death. His partner somehow, against tremendous odds (guns, knives, etc) made it to him and saved him just at the very last second.

Later that night he told his partner he owed him his life and would do pretty much anything to repay him.
His partner said in so many words "okay, get us some Bud Light and let's watch the Cowboy game together".

Witten was overwhelmed....and told them they could choose the game and he would treat them and their families to great seats as his guests.
They were pumped!

Both Ben and Skin say they have routinely kept in touch with Zamarippa ever since then and considered him a friend.
They were, as expected, pretty tore up about his senseless death.

They said, of all people, he was the type of police officer that the public would most like to have.
Fair, honest, not remotely racist, and one who always had the public's interest (who he defended) at heart.

Joey Gallo of the Rangers posted on Instagram that he was walking around Downtown Dallas with Mazara when an Officer said "I know who you guys are". They though they were in trouble but it was Patrick Zamarippa, a huge fan of the team. They talked for 15 minutes about the Rangers, they thought he was a great guy. This is the picture Gallo posted -

Yes, "no justice - no peace" and "pigs in a blanket, fry em like bacon" is not anti-police rhetoric. Got it. Good to know.

fwiw, those were things being said in other rallies.
From everything I've heard, the vibe in Dallas was very peaceful from both sides.

Cops were even getting selfies with some of the protesters. Chief Brown and the force there work pretty well with the community, and are good at working protest rallies...in part because the attitude is that they are protecting the Constitutional Right of the protestors instead of trying to intimdate them.

I wonder if the NFL will allow the Cowboys to wear a patch in his honor.

Yes, I agree. It was a peaceful rally without bloodshed. Not like the ones in other cities.

It was peaceful but it was still anti-police
