Does anybody think we should have kept Rob Ryan as DC, especially considering last year's patchwork/MASH defense.

This article was interesting, specifically this stat. "Ryan used 14 different starting lineups due to injury when in Dallas—only one other team used more. This led to Ryan using 449 lineup changes, the most in football."

What's your opinion on this?

I had no problems with Ryan. I wasn't a fan of the switch to the 4-3 and I think the 3-4 would've worked if we invested highly into the trenches but it is what it is. At times it felt like he was the head coach, you'll notice watching the Saints the cameras dont pan to him every other play like they did in Dallas.

Didn't read the article but there was more to the situation than just performance.

Before the season started i was ok with the decision but now i wish we wouldve kept rob ryan. our linebackers looked like probowlers in his scheme now they look lost..

Ryan probably enjoys being a little more out of the spotlight in New Orleans, even though they get pretty good media coverage.

Regardless, I feel like our defense lacks something that the top defenses in the league have, but I cant quite put my finger on what exactly it is.

You haven't seen my threads and many posts? I've said it from day 1. Loudly. Bitterly.

I was personally impressed with Ryan for providing an inspired defense despite all the injuries on D. I was shocked when they fired him. I thought the D would've been good if healthy.

From my understanding of the schemes, the roles in the prior defense to the tampa 2 are different...and the players we have dont seem to quite fit the scheme.

I feel like we were fooled during that first game against the Giants with Eli throwing all those int's, because he still threw 4 touchdowns...and we gave up a ton of passing yards. Our rushing defense is fine, but our passing defense has been the thorn in our side this year.

People seem to forget the reports coming out last season of his absence in Defensive meetings and the Dline coach taking over much of the weeks prep.

I loved the hire of Ryan, but was less than impressed with some of the results he got.

I would have been happy to upgrade at DC, but I've said all along that Kiffin at this point in his career is a major DOWNGRADE. I think the results speak for themselves.

Ryan seemed to get a lot more out of this group of guys than Kiffin is, but neither one of them were THAT great. The fact that our defensive players just aren't very good probably has a lot to do with that.

Another question...with the evolution of offenses in the NFL, especially with them being very pass heavy, is the tampa 2 an outdated scheme/system, or are we(Cowboys) just improperly equipped with the right players for the system?

I think the author's opinion that the Saints will be the kryptonite against the Denver offense is specious at best. Actually I find it rather laughable this early in the season. We all witnessed today just how potent that offense is. The vapid, vicarious arrogance displayed by writers usually ends up with egg-on-face moments like what happened in Dallas after the loss to San Diego. Everybody's got a plan until they get hit and the Saints won't face the likes of a Denver offense anytime soon, unless the Cowboys explode at the Superdome later this year. I too concur that Ryan should probably have been given another season.

The new scheme has turned our best players into JAGs, and we're hearing things will stay this way until we can find some defensive linemen who can put consistent pressure on the QB. Clearly, that is not an acceptable solution. Garrett needs to fix this, and quick.

Thats another problem we have, we need a front 4 that can put pressure on the QB, so we dont have to blitz...

I think once Rod gets who he wants in here and weeds out the bum's we'll be OK next season or 2. I just want to know why his system worked so quick in NO? We have better players on paper. Are we really that stupid? Rob looks like a genius in NO. He really will be employed in 5 mins from now on!

The Tampa-2 simply won't work without consistent and "persistent" pressure up front, preferably with just four lineman. Even with the "robber" hybrid, holes still exist to be exploited. The speed and coverage abilities of Carter and Lee were likely used to help justify the switch to 4-3 but as the last two weeks have shown, they are having considerable difficulty covering backs and tight ends. I think we must wait still but if the linebacker unit as a whole has not improved by December then serious questions must be asked about the perceived abilities of Lee and Carter. These questions include the following:

Is Sean Lee as good as Brian Urlacher?
Is Bruce Carter as good as Lance Briggs?
Is J.J. Wilcox as good as Chris Conte?
Is Barry Church as good as Major Wright?

These four key positions are crucial in Kiffin's scheme. It should be no surprise that he and Marinelli are trying to emulate what they did in Chicago and Tampa. I have read that it took 4 or 5 years to get Kiffin's system up and "humming" in Tampa. The Cowboys don't have nearly that long, hence the opinion by some to keep Ryan on for a bit longer.
