Rob Ryan..wait..dont shoot me..yet

Went to game 2 in Seattle last season. The defensive coaching was a disaster in that game, and we couldn't even substitute well. Ryan should have been fired after that game - you can't see some of that stuff from a TV broadcast, but you sure could from behind the bench.
Outcoached that game. The Ryan brothers inspire players emotionally I think, but probably get destroyed in the X and O department. I suspect that IQ wise the Dallas team probably is a bit slow overall - and we don't play to strengths no matter what coaches we hire.......very frustrating....

Rob is motivated right now to prove Dallas wrong for how they got rid of him. It probably also helps to have a no nonsense head coach always on his arse.

I know Stretch Smith, who couldn't stand Rob here, has said Payton made him eliminate most of the super exotic and tricky stuff from the playbook. Makes sense.

Can you please explain. I don't understand your post. Who is "Stretch Smith"?

I don't think the cowboys have good personnel on defense. Our defensesive line has two rag tags, hatcher should be your 4th best lineman, and Ware is so beat up I hurt for him.

We have no linebacker capable of covering.

Church is solid. I can't figure out what Wilcox brings to the table.

The cowboys are rolling out guys on that line that I've never heard of. We need an upgrade up front... Call Beyonce

Yes, i've been against firing him since it happened and now we see why give him some half decent players and he's pretty darn good there was way more then scheme wrong with our D and we're seeing it again now

I think 'linebackers capable of covering' are misnomers. Realistically there are literally no linebackers that can match up on a receiver in today's league; anything on linebacker is a mismatch, be it receiver, running back or tight end. What's more likely are good defensive coaches who know how to put their linebackers in the right spots in anticipation of what the offense is looking for.

what rob and rex's defensive schemes are good at is disguising their front 7 to confuse the offense on who to block (because on almost every play, there is at least one person coming in on blitz) For this, you don't exactly need All-pro personnel. As opposed to Kiffin's defense which is more predictable and relies on pressure up the middle (usually with a penetrating 3 technique like warren sapp (tampa) or tommie harris or henry melton (chicago) to force the short throws out to the flats where the cornerbacks and linebackers are ready to maul the receivers.

the one thing tampa 2 absolutely requires are lightning fast linebackers to react to the ball and pressure up the middle with only the front 4, otherwise opposing qb's can pick apart the defense all day. This is kinda why i think demarcus ware hasnt been as effective because the linebackers are asked to drop into coverage so often that ware also has gap responsibility for the running game now and cant exclusively rush the qb like he's accustomed to.

If anything, cornerbacks are the one luxury that tampa-2 can afford not to have, because all they need to do is sit back five yards and break on the ball if it's thrown their way. Which is unfortunate, because it's the one position where we have heavily invested in these past couple of years.

I don't think it was as much Rob Ryan as it was we were done with the 3-4. We were constantly needing new pieces for it. I'm glad we switched to the 4-3. It's far from perfect but will get stronger as the year goes on.

This year all of a sudden everyone is trying to act like they are big Rob Ryan fans and wish he was still in big d. All you guys were scapecating him and glad when he was fired. I can't lie I was glad he was fired as well I got tired of him running his mouth.

Ryan probably enjoys being a little more out of the spotlight in New Orleans, even though they get pretty good media coverage.

Regardless, I feel like our defense lacks something that the top defenses in the league have, but I cant quite put my finger on what exactly it is.

We lack the ability to stop anyone.

I was all for it - what has he ever done was at Cleveland or Oakland

Dallas last year - Ryan's defense finished 19th overall, 17th against the run and 21st against the pass.

a OVERRATED DC

Aside from the inability to stop anyone, the fact that our LB's have terribly regressed and our secondary seems to be actually playing worse (if that was possible) should frighten anyone who calls themselves a Cowboys fan.

People seem to forget the reports coming out last season of his absence in Defensive meetings and the Dline coach taking over much of the weeks prep.

Those are the type of trumped-up trivialities that HR departments are asked to assemble to mask the real reason for canning someone.

but wait, we had one against St Louis????? (insert additional sarcastic remarks here)

Well clearly what they did in the off season has been a complete disaster. They made Rob a scape goat and this is what we have gotten. A DC who at this point in his life has no clue what he is doing.
