Rob Should Be Brought Back

I said this another thread, but the Cowboys are ranked #10 in the league in points allowed which is without question the most important defensive stat. Last season we were ranked second to last. That's pretty damn impressive to improve that much without any major additions. Sure our defense has looked poor at times particularly in the 1st Eagles game and Giants game, but overall they're much better than last season. If we can add a pass rusher opposite Ware and a legit #2 corner to go with Jenkins there's no doubt we can be a top 5 defense next season. Rob Ryan should be brought back no if, ands, or buts about it.

To be honest this defense has been exposed. It stopped working under Phillips and at times has broken down on Ryan. This is mostly personnel related... it's not Ryan's fault.

Newman is done. Lee can not be the only player in the middle. We need a REAL pass rusher opposite of Ware. I actually like our line rotation but miss what we had in Bowen as a rotation guy.

This is exactly my point. Considering the holes the defense has like no pass rusher opposite Ware, mediocre defensive line play, very little speed at middle linebacker, and obviously a poor secondary. Considering all that and for them to be ranked #10 in points is allowed VERY impressive.

i want him back too. he really impressed me being this is his first year with the team. give him an offseason to work more with the defense, & i think great things will happen next season.

I don't think there's any question he will be back. 10th in points allowed while having to deal with major injury problems and alot of crappy players all the while playing against top offenses in this league every other week.. he's done a solid job for his first year here.

He should be brought back. Give him an off season and have a plan to have someone who will take over once he leaves.

There will be a couple of coaches who represent upgrades likely available this off season. If we can get one, we should do it without thinking twice.

What we need to do is upgrade our talent on defense.

Bingo. We have played an elite offense like every other week, have marginal talent, have dealt with major injuries, have had to dumb down the schemes for our idiot players, and are still ranking 10th in the league in points allowed.

I can't imagine doing a much better job than that.

Yep. But the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Ryan's defenses tend to do better after his first year, so that's an argument for keeping him. But if there's an upgrade out there, we should upgrade and not look back. I think the team's pretty happy with Ryan, though.

The way I see it there will be at least 7 HC openings this offseason. Unless Cowher, Gruden, et al jump at any of these, I can't see what Rob Ryan isn't among the best 7 HC candidates out there. I don't think it comes down to whether the Cowboys fire him, it comes down to if he leaves for a HC gig.

We can do better than Rob Ryan. No turnovers the last half of the season, epic collapses versus the Cards and Giants, and a secondary that still doesn't know what play to run 15 weeks into the season.

Epic collapse?

I think it's funny when people point to games like the Cardinals game. You might as well call the Patriots game an epic collapse as well.

The fact of the matter is, if the offense had shown up in either those games there isn't a "collapse".

The defense held the opponents to 13 points for nearly the entire game in both games and somehow the defense is at fault for an "epic collapse"?

Unreal. If it weren't for the defense, both of those games are blowouts because the offense was doing nothing.

The Giants game was a collapse. So we're at one game where the defense failed to show up while the offense did? Is there another game that has happened? Is there another game where the defense did not show up and the offense did?

We can look at the Patriots, Cardinals and I'd include the Lions as well. Three games where the defense showed up but the offense did not.

All the offense had to do for three wins in the last four weeks, was sustain a drive only long enough to kill about three minutes of the clock, and to kick two end of game field goals. And here, the 'goat' was usually the offensive line's interior. Even on special teams, allowing two blocked kicks this season. In coverage, special teams was strong.

After the top three OCs and top three DCs, you have Fisher, Cowher, Gruden and any current HCs who become unemployed before you start looking at the Rob Ryan's of the world. He might get some interviews, but he's probably not going to get an offer based off of his time in Dallas if his body of work wasn't good enough before.

Ryan is average. I think he has gotten about what he should have out of his talent.

I would look to get rid of him as soon as a better defensive mind became available. The problem with Ryan is he will parlay any success he has into a HC position and then we'll be stuck trying to find someone. He'll probably try and take all his assistants so we will be devastated with our defensive staff gutted.

I'd rather take a DC who has failed as a HC and got that out of his blood. A guy like Dom Capers or perhaps Mike Nolan - both might be available again. I think of the great success guys like Haslett and Gregg Williams have had as DCs after failed attempts at HC and I am envious. It would be great to have some stability there like we have had on the offense so we can generate a set of players who fit a fixed system. This is a great advantage that Pittsburgh has had with Lebeau entrenced there for so long with his set of loyal assistants. I want to emulate their model.

That's exactly what I want to see, and those were the top two coaches worth throwing Ryan over for if either are available. Install somebody on that side long term, and worry about drafting the right players for your system on both sides of the ball.

My own preference is for Nolan and Sparano on offense, but Capers is more likely to be the guy Garrett really wants badly enough to make a move for. It'd be better to have it happen on our own terms than to have to scramble if Ryan gets a HC gig down the road.

Yes, if Ryan has a longer-term contract that Jerry doesn't want to give up maybe Garrett can convince Capers to come in as Asst. HC and defensive consultant.

The bottomline is that Ryan has no loyalty to us and we should show no loyalty to him. He is a short-term rental but we have long-term plans for this franchise that may not match his agenda. We need someone who will bleed silver and blue for awhile like Garrett will.

I also agree with Sporano. Perhaps he would be happy to come back as OL coach and running game coordinator and assist Garrett as the defacto OC even if he doesn't have the title. He sit up in the pressbox and guide Garrett through the game as a second set of experienced eyes. I hope Garrett still wanting to call plays doesn't keep Sporano away.
