Robert Quinn vs Patrick Peterson

Here is the thing. What makes a great safety? Instincts. You can't teach instincts. How can anyone be certain PP will make a great safety?...

Exactly! Just because a CB is big and fast doesn't mean he can be a S. An impact Safety has to have intelligence, situational awareness, the leadership to quarterback the secondary, route recognition skills, and the instinct to be in the right place at the right time. If PP hasn't proven in college that he can play S, I'm not going to risk a top 10 pick that he can make the transition in the pros. Besides, a great pass rusher like Quinn, automatically makes your secondary better.

PP - Quinn ain't bad though, but I can see him being a bit rusty and dominated the first few years.

I'm also not ready to give up on Spencer yet. In addition, I think Butler could be a starter if we needed him to be.

I never saw Quinn play since he was suspended for the 2010 season. Anyone have a strength/weakness scouting report on him and who his best comparison is?

He plays exactly like D. Ware. He has the same quickness around the edge, same quick first step, same hand-fighting ability, and the same ability to dip his shoulder when he's speed rushing around an OT. Oh yeah, he's 1-inch taller and 10-lbs heavier than Ware. So, just imagine a slightly bigger version of Ware lined up opposite Ware on game day. Now, wipe the drool from your chin. :)

I like my man Quinn too, but this a bit over the top hype for a college player who not has played a down in the NFL or even in college for a year.

So he's the same as the best rush LB in the league, but just bigger? That is the true definition of hype right there.
lol I do agree he could be a great one though.

I'd be fine with him, but lean toward Peterson right now (who will not be there at 9). Mainly b/c I have not fully given up Spencer and I like Butler's potential.

True. I should of qualified it.

Ok im sold...

As of today...

Quinn > Peterson

Give me the pass rusher with upside.

Petersons size as a corner scares me and we have nothing to go on as a FS.

We do know that he is an elite PR though.

Still... If im an NFL QB I fear the Rusher more than I do the Safety.

Robert Quinn. :D

Just hope he falls. *fingers & toes crossed* :starspin

Patrick Peterson is as close to being a shutdown CB as you'll find... Teams rarely threw his direction in college.

Not in the games I saw.

it's amazing how often this is thrown out there. Peterson's value is as a playmaker, not as a shut down guy. He'll get beat, but he'll make you pay eventually, and add to it he's dangerous when he gets his hands on the ball. As far as long term potential, I don't see him as a Revis, Asamougha or Bailey, but more of a Charles Woodson. Physical in press coverege, great ball skills, excellent blitzer, but far from a shut down corner.

Not the case at all.

He's a great prospect, but teams didn't treat him like he was Deion. Julio Jones caught several balls while defended by Peterson. Others caught passes on him in almost every LSU game I saw, which was several of them.

He would be an excellent pick at #9, but IMO, he's nowhere near the kind of guy you pass up an elite pass rusher for.

Something really weird has happened if Robert Quinn is there at 9. Down year for top flight talent, physical specimen who goes all out all the time....If he is there I get Usain Bolt to deliver the card.

Quinn. Easy. Or trade down pick up a third rd pick and take Jenkins from Fla if they really want a corner.

Jenkins went back to school.

I know we're talking about Quinn replacing Spencer, but IIRC doesn't Rob Ryan's scheme require 3 OLB/DE types? We're all calling his D a 3-4 and a lot of people here are assuming it's the same 3-4 we ran, it's not. It looks more like a 46 defense.

Someone in another forum gave a great discription of what our defense would look like with Ryan here. I thought it was an awesome breakdown so that we know what we're working with.

"Should be fun to scout out new types of prospects though. The 46 is a hybrid defense that should allow us to wreak a lot of havoc once it's built properly... and I think our current personnel is a LOT closer to being complete in that defense than we would be trying to switch completely to a 4-3 or even a different version of the 3-4 (Parcells/Lebeau). So this news EXCITES me A LOT! ...although it's still not finalized, last I checked.

Robert Quinn could now be back in the picture... though I still think that would be too much of a luxury pick. But the 46 requires 3 DE/OLB types being on the field at the same time. Rather than draft Quinn, I suspect/would prefer... Victor Butler get a lot more playing time in this defense as a Jack (LOLB), Charlie (ROLB) or RE. With Ware and Spencer filling the other 2 spots.

RDE - Demarcus Ware - Rushes the QB more than any other front 7 guy. Job is to beat the LT.

RDT - Jay Ratliff - This moves Ratliff out of the NT position, but into a place where he should benefit more. He'll attack the LG, 1 on 1. I've been waiting for him to get away from taking on double teams, so if this happens, I'll be a happy man. Lining up next to Ware would be something new to this defense, but it would be AWESOME! With the LT and LG having to take on Ware and Ratliff respectively, they would be overwhelmed on that side of the line.

LDT/NT - Joshua Price Brent - I would like an upgrade here. Still not sold on Brent, but right now, he would be the best option for us as NT. This guy NEEDS to overwhelm the Center and one of the Guards in order for this defense to realize it's beauty.

LDE - Igor Olshansky/Stephen Bowen - Same job as RDT..lines up over the LG and needs to be strong as an ox to bull rush, skilled enough to stunt or collapse the pocket. Typical size of a 3-4 DE.

ROLB (Charlie) - Victor Butler
LOLB (Jack) - Anthony Spencer

I don't know who would play those positions, but that would be my guess at this point. These 2 guys have to have similar skills, so that it would be that much more difficult to disguise the defensive assignment. They often line up on the same side of the field (strong side). So while pass rush is important as always, they also need to be solid run stuffers and have fluidity to cover TEs. They have tough jobs, so they really need to be intelligent AND highly skilled.

ILB (Mike) - Bradie James/Sean Lee - All I know is that Sean Lee better be healthy and ready next season. I don't think Bradie is good enough to handle all the responsibilities of a Mike in this defense. We'll have to roll with him for now, but Lee has the intelligence and coverage skills to make it work. That is... if he can stay healthy... which is a big if.

CBs - Jenkins/Newman/Scandrick - Our cornerbacks are going to be left on islands. The beauty of this defense is stuffing the run, but that leaves our corners and FS in tough spots.

FS - No one - Needs to be a true centerfielder as he'll be left as the single man and without the help of the SS as much.

SS - No one - Is almost like a hybrid LB/S. Has to help stuff the run and blitz the QB when not in coverage."
