Some will say without a doubt. He is listed at 6'4" 252 lbs. How much weight would he have to put on to be an every down player and then learn to play with his hand in the dirt.
Heck Taconisnt playing every down. Rod was a loser head coach and I just don’t see the value even as a DC or DL coach. He’s certainly not the best talent evaluator.

The majority of the fanbase wanted Watt. He was leaps and bounds the #1 favorite. The love for him reached Steven Jackson levels. To make it seem like it was an even split between Watt/Taco is not even close to accurately capturing this board's thoughts.

I know McClay doesn't have the final word in the war room. If JG, Rod, Sanjay, Kellen etc. want to have a voice on Day 3, I can live with that. But let the guy who's had a ton of success and scouts players for a living do his job on Day 1 and Day 2.

Rod didn't know what position TJ could play and it lead to us drafting an inferior player. Hope they learned from it.

Maybe there was a majority on the side of Watt - I wasn't saying there was a 50/50 split - but do you really expect NFL teams to poll the fan base and draft according to the results?

You are contradicting yourself to agree on the one hand that McClay doesn't have the final say, and then on the other hand act as if those people who are part of the final say weren't involved with the players that were drafted that point toward McClay being "the guy who's had a ton of success". The success is part on the scouting, and part on the decision of the group based on the scouting. It's not that the good draft picks are all McClay's and the bad draft picks are all the other people overriding McClay. All the picks are based on a review of the scouting and the options and the goup makes a decision. Watt/Taco wasn't the first guy others discussed and collectively made a decision on. Others, and McClay, have been involved in the decisions on every draft pick, both good and bad.

Update: Today on the Draft Show, Broaddus admitted he was dead wrong about McClay wanting Watt.

McClay reached out to Broaddus and told him, "I appreciate you trying to be nice, but I didn't think Watt could be an everydown player with his hand down."

McClay was a Taco guy. I stand corrected.

I don't hate the decision and the Cowboys took the guy they felt could be an every down player instead of taking an undersized DE that would most likely only be a pass rush specialist in a 4-3.

You don't take a 1 trick pony with your first pick and that is what we would be doing if we had drafted Watt to play DE in a 4-3 for us.

A one trick pony would be much better than a no trick pony. It was a bad pick, or at least looks like it at this point. It happens.

Probably 75% of this board knew drafting Taco over Watt was a moronic decision. Taking a stiff like Taco is the sort of thing that happens when an old fool who's been trying to pretend he's a football man for 30 years is in charge.

Broaddus getting called out by McClay is pure comedy.

I can just hear Broaddus’ mea culpa “I had it wrong guys. I had bad information.”

McClay really liked TJ that year. The coaches (Rod) thought Taco would be a better fit because he played with his hand in the dirt in college, whereas Watt was more of a projection since he mostly rushed the passer while standing.

Imagine where this defense would be if we had Watt at RE. Rod gotta go.

We have said it for years. The coaching in Dallas has been a complete joke. Garrett on offense and Mari on D. The faster we get rid of both of these losers the better. Mari has passed on DL after DL that hasn't fit his stupid system. And our Dline has suffered ever since.
