With McClain's past experience with the media, I don't blame him one bit for being guarded with them.
I do know that much of his bad experience with the media was self inflicted, but still, I don't blame him.
I did see his most recent interview, and I agree that he wasn't Mr. Charming up there but some people just aren't good in interviews anyway. Dez isn't always the best in front of cameras and microphones either, but that doesn't keep him from being a beast on the field... from being a top 3 WE in the league. Ask Marshawn Lynch how much he likes giving interviews, boss.
A couple of things that I really do like when he's talking to the media: First, as someone has already pointed out, McClain is always saying things like "we" instead of "I", which is really good. He has said several times about playing for his team mates, or playing for each other. About loyalty and loving his defensive mates. Really, really good IMO, because I think that is what drives Rolando.
Secondly, you can really see the edge he has. The meanness that he plays with is always there. He gives the answers he wants to give and doesn't let any reporter push or cajole him into answering a question that he doesn't want to. Like the interview from yesterday, when he said that his groin was "better than last week" and then when asked the question a different way by another reporter, he smiled and said, "better than last week."
Despite the smile on his face, you just get the feeling that he doesn't see anything funny (hello Alabama police). The media might not love his demeanor... but I promise you his team mates do. McClain's physical side is always just below the surface and it comes out in a big way on game day. So we don't like his interviews because he doesn't seem very nice and forthcoming... well, the opposing offense doesn't like him very much either.
Some of the most intimidating football players in league history have been not great interviews. McClain is fine by me as long as he keeps playing mean and keeps flying around the field blowing people up.
Besides, McClain will get better in interviews I think, as he gets more used to dealing with the Dallas media and kind of gets to know some of them.
