The Top 100 Players of 2012 narrator said:
"A leaguewide ballot initiative asked current NFLers to list their top 20 players regardless of position. Their responses were the sole criteria for the rankings in this countdown."
That is the basis of this yearly popularity contest of a select number of current NFL players. Each voter has an opportunity to pick twenty players from the entire league for their ballot. Logically, they are picking from acknowledged starters on all 32 rosters. How large is that number?
704
The ballot slices nearly
86% of the figure completely out of the equation. Tony Romo made the cut representing just a tad over
14% of all NFL starters regardless of position.
Fourteen percent. Folks are going to argue about how low Romo fell on this year's version of the players' Who's Who list. That's cool. It is an old argument that's not going to ever stop in my opinion no matter how successful Romo may be in his career.
However, whether folks care or not, this 'flawed' and 'controversial' list states that enough of his voting peers believe that Romo falls within the top fifteen percent of the entire league. It also says that not enough of his voting peers could remove him from that lofty tier by omission either--even if that was their intention.
It does not mean very much to those who think he should be higher on the list. Ironically, it means a lot to those who believe he does not belong on the list at all. What it all basically means, is that no matter how slighted the overall voting had been against Romo, enough of his peers think enough of him to name him as one of the best overall players.
That's an honor. It may not be perfect. Or pretty. Or sit well with a lot of people, but it is an honor. And it cannot be taken away from him as well.
