Let me first start off by saying that I wanted to take a closer look at Romo's performance in clutch situations from last year because in my opinion you can NEVER be great if you are not clutch. Being GOOD for 3.75 quarters is NEVER enough. So I took a look at how Romo faired in clutch situations and this is what I came up with - as well as some stats to back up my point.

First and foremost Tony started 11 games last year including the playoff game at seattle. Game 1 @ Car - No clutch situation. Game 2 @ Was - Romo was given the ball after Novak missed his FG attempt and drove dallas all the way down the field and in position to win the game. CLUTCH. Game 3 @ Arz - no clutch situations. Game 4 Indy - Romo drove dallas down the field to tie the game early and the fourth, put the team ahead midway through the fourth, AND kept the colts offense off the field when Dal got the ball with 3 mins left and the colts had all 3 TOs and a 2 min warning. I can understand if some of you do not call this clutch because the game wasn't necessarily on the line but it was positive play late in the game for Tony.

Game 5 TB - NO clutch situations. Game 6 - @ NYG Obviously Romo hits witten deep and sets up Gramaticas GW FG. CLUTCH. Game 7 - NO - no clutch situation. Game 8 @ Atl - Romo drives the cowboys down the field late in the 4th, while Barber finished up the drive to put the boys up 10 with 2mins left in the game to seal the victory. CLUTCH. Game 9 Philly - No clutch situations. Game 10 vs Detroit - Romo drives the team all the way down the field inside the redzone in position to potentially tie the game and fails on 4th and goal . Not Clutch enough!. Game 11 vs Seattle - Romo drives the team all way down field and in position to win the game. CLUTCH (at QB) . So all in all - in his 1st 11 starts as a QB in the NFL romo came across 6 CLUTCH situations in 11 games and in my opinion he came up CLUTCH in 5 of those 6 opportunities - the 1 instance when he failed is when he fell short vs the lions at the 1 yardline - which isnt too shabby.

So, if you ask me - We DEFINITELY have a clutch performer at the QB position for the dallas cowboys and in all honesty there is NOTHING more important in sports than how clutch a player is. It is what seperates the good from the great, boys I think we have a GREAT one in Tony Romo.

Lastly, for all you numbers guys....here are the NFL's best qbs as far as comp% goes in late game / clutch situations from 2006.

Thanks for the stats and all your hard work.

While I am no where near putting Romo and Greatness together.

I dont need stats to know what I saw... the guy made some CLUTCH/KEY passes on 3rd and long.... he led us down the field against Seattle in his first playoff game and almost won it.

I just hope last year WASNT an Abberation.

Seeing Romo come through it the clutch situation is the main reason I do have confidence in him. Many QB's do not handle the situation with the poise that Romo displayed. Since he has been a member of this team he has improved his game each year and I don't see any reason why Romo will not continue to improve. As for some of the comments by some in the media about defenses finding Romo weakness all I can say is any time a defense can put pressure up the middle and contain the outside with their DE it will have a negative affect on any QB even the best of them. If the OL can provide a cleaner pocket for Romo to work in I think Romo has a chance to have a very big season

To say Romo and Clutch in the same sentence is ridicolous. Let him play
and quit 'overhypying' the QB of America's team.

Romo did come through in the clutch many times so yes I consider him clutch. Your example well hate to tell you but Tiger has missed putts and failed to come through in the clutch same could be said for every star player in any sport. Clutch does not mean perfect even Staubach came up short on many occasions

McCordsville Cowboy's post fails worse than this pole vaulter.

Excellent OP, though. Romo was about as clutch as they come last year. I've said it numerous times, his 70% completion pct on 3rd and 6+ is unheard of - only the great ones can manage it, and oftentimes even they fall short of that plateau. The guy is dynamite when the heat is on. If you're looking for a hope for the future, it starts with Tony Romo and ends with DeMarcus Ware.

Great post. Don't let the Romo Hater (proven in every post he's ever done here) deflect the good work you have done.

I'm not 'Hatin'....

I like Romo and his spark he gave the boys last year. He was it, no reasons to refute that. I just think he has to improve on his 'pocket clock' or else he is a fumble or concussion away from drafting Brohm next year.

You cant call a guy 'Clutch' who was a partial starter for one year and had the single biggest error late in a game in that years playoffs. When you deliver consistently in big games, you can be called 'Clutch'.

Interesting data. However, I have to skeptical of anything that has both Eli Manning and David Carr in the top 5 and that is good thing.

I would've said something else, but I enjoy my time here.

Who knows if Romo will ultimately be defined as clutch. But last year he was CLUTCH! He moved the chains on many 3rd and long situations and put us in a position to win many games. Even in Seattle! If the defense held then the botched FG would be a moot point.

Sadly last years defense and several of the previous seasons are the definition of not being clutch.

I'm not worried about Romo being clutch, he proved that over and over again last year. What he needs to work on is consistently moving the offense for positive yardage and taking the short to intermediate passing passes so he's not having to convert so many improbable 3rd and 14's.

That pass to Witten against the Giants was the most clutch thing we've seen here in a long time.

And LOL at that pole vault clip, SP. :laugh2:

who brought us into position to kick that FG?

Its a little more than half a season...

Consistency over time is what you hope for. I just dont see how you can be referred to as clutch like a Montana or Elway after a partition of a season.
