Romo late hits

I don't want Romo to turn into Brady, but certainly after this week, I think refs around the league are going to have to look to protect the guy a little more. Refs are people too, and I'm sure they watch sportscenter, nfl live e.t.c. just as we do...

Refs like people are also very much able to be moved into certain directions based on their prior beliefs. Much like with some of the calls on Mike Jenkins last year.

I think Romo takes an unusually high amount of hits well after he has thrown the ball, but without being a media darling QB, no one really cares.

I think video clip, Brady gets a flag for being barely brushed, while in the same game, Flacco is hit helmet to helmet and driven into the ground without a call.

Hopefully that game puts romo in a position where refs are more keen to look
at the hits he is taking.

Everybody knows it different rules for Brady, I think a few were even included in the new CBA. But don't quote me on it.

Romo gets treated the way NFL QBs should be treated. The problem is with the way Brady and Manning are officiated, not Romo.

I watched Matthew Stafford's part on NFL.com's Sound FX and saw several really ticky tacky late hit penalties against the Chiefs from last week. I saw a bunch of similar hits from around the league from last Sunday that didn't get flagged. It really looks like some of these QB's are getting more benefit of the doubt than others.

Romo isnt on the "Golden Child" list so you might as well forget about him getting any close calls.

Big time, Andy Reid was right in everything he said about Vick not getting treated like a QB last year.

I'm glad you posted this. Now why in the world would Matthew Stafford be labled a protected QB around the league?

Maybe it's just that different officiating crews see things differently, and that sometimes what the human eye sees in the heat of the moment isn't always completely accurate. Perhaps some discrepencies in calls from game to game and QB to QB have something to do with different circumstances, different officials, different angles to see the play, and perhaps other variables.

I don't doubt that subconsciously some officials might be somewhat more aware of the icons in the league like Brady and Manning, and that possibly could color how a ref sees a close call, but overall I think they call it as they see it. There certainly isn't the leaguewide conspiracy the large group of Oliver Stone wannabe's want to project.

This is one of the things that anger me most when watching Cowboys games. Seems there is never a penalty called for Romo.

They are mostly crap penalties but It would be nice if officials were fair with them.

Don't fans ever get tired of playing the victim and whining about how everyone is always picking on us?

It could be several things, Stafford was a top draft pick, suffered season ending injuries the last couple years and ownership has been hard on the NFL to protect their investment, it's a feel good story for the NFL that the lowly Lions can become contenders, the fact that he was mic'ed up this week for NFL films and the officiating crews knew that and was gonna give him any close calls, could be any of those reasons or all of the above.

There's actually one late hit penalty called on the Chiefs where Stafford gets hit, looks up at the Official and yells at him "C'mon man!" and then the flag comes in. Ask and ye shall receive!

Here's the link if you want to check it out:

Yeah, it "could be" this or that.

The reality is it "could be" this or that with a hell ofa lot of players if you want to look for it. There are plenty of potential "feel good" stories. Romo going from undrafted FA at a D-II school to NFL QB can be a "feel good" story. Lot's of QB's have stories that could be exploited by the NFL as a "feel good" story. Stafford isn't special in that regard.

It just amounts to what people want to believe. Some people submerge themselves in self pity and love to always feel like the victim, and people like that can always come up with a "could be" story to explain it.

This. There are close calls and then there are just plain no-calls that should have been called. For instance going back a year or two I recall a helmet to helmet hit playing against (I believe) the Eagles that came a good second to second and a half after Romo got rid of the ball.

No call on it.

Guys have picked up Romo and driven him into the ground without calls.

Meanwhile Brady gets a call for someone glancing his knee.

Or they "could be" right and you "could be" wrong.:p:

Yeah, and it "COULD BE" that the league has issued a secret communique' to every offical and every league officer and every NFL team except Dallas saying that the collective group is going to collude to screw Dallas every time they can.

The key is "COULD BE", and there are a million "COULD BE" situations floating out there. Why choose this one? Just because it suits you? Sorry, doesn't quite substitute for logic or evidence. All it amounts to is people believing what they want, and latching onto whatever "COULD BE" suits them.

Amen.

Where are the stats on how many roughing the passer penalties have been called on hits to Romo versus the league average?

Well someone stated in another topic that he has only received 1 since 2006, not sure how accurate that is.
