Just thought I would get all ya'lls opinions on this thread at extreme skins. They are saying that the 'Boys had no plan and we basically lucked out with Tony Romo. So do you think Parcells had a plan, or did he just luck into Romo being good? My opinion is anyone you pick/sign/play is always going to be a crap shoot as far as performance goes. I beleive Parcells did everything he could to prepare Romo and now we are reaping the dividends of his investment.

How would they know if we had a plan or not?

They're organization keeps fooling them into believing they have one.

I believe Parcells knew what he was doing and I don't think either the lunatics at ES know what they're doing nor does Commanders management from Shorty Snyder on up. :lmao2:

Life is good.

I believe that this was planned. Bill Parcells spotted him at a camp where his only job was to throw balls back to the QB's that were being looked at. Sean Payton tried to trade for Romo when he ended up in New Orleans. Accidents is not being 2nd or 3rd team like Romo but Kurt Warner.

Bill Parcells slowly brought this kid along knowing that if he threw him into the fire right away he might end up failing. He held on to him for 4 years and that is no accident. I have seen a lot of QB's come and go and Bill knew this kid was special and would not trade him.

It was no accident but at the same time he is exceeding expectations of even the sternest person including Parcells no matter how he tries to downplay the abilities of the QB. And actually I really believe he thinks Romo can improve some.

To call this an accident is to ignore the facts that too many things were done that doesnt happen by accident. I am sure Bill didnt accidently offer a UD QB a contract. I am sure Sean Payton didnt make an offer to trade picks for him accidently. So to say this is an accident really is an injustice to everyone in the Cowboys organization past and present that knew what they were doing.

Sure he has exceeded expectations but he is no accident and to suggest that is just being asanine or totally oblivious to the details that show Bill knew he had a QB in Romo he just didnt know how good he could be.

What the hell a plan or luck?

Parcells kept Romo around when he could have traded him to various teams. Then things just kinda fell into place. It was neither a plan or luck, it was FOOTBALL... These things happen in football. If it was luck than why did we even have him on the team?

Lucky and Good often go hand in hand.

Romo is good enough to be lucky. He has to take care of the ball. BP mentioned and we all see the way he gets when pressured... wants to make a play on every play.... sometimes you gotta come back to fight on next play....

I have much faith in this kid

Parcells was saying as early as 2 years ago, that Romo was one to watch. I believe it was when the wars were going on about Testeverde vs Henson and Bill made a comment to the effect of "Hey, we've got another QB here who can play this game". It's no accident he's still here.

It's easier for Redstink fans to say we were lucky than admit we were good. Please!

Why does anyone here care what a Commander fan thinks?

Evidence is there that we knew Romo was good:

1) Henson gets released.
2) Sean Payton wants Romo in New Orleans. BP and JJ do not trade.
3) Romo plays a LOT in preseason.
4) Romo gets a new deal in preseason to keep him in Dallas longer.
5) Romo gets told that he will start at some point this season.

Is all of this just dumb luck?

i think luck may have come when quincy carter got released, past that they knew they had a chance, and entering this year, they really thought he had it, and after preseason they figured they had it, and after playing

just think if quincy hadn't done drugs, would they have kept romo or henson who they just signed to that contract?

I believe Cowboys did have a plan with Romo and they followed it for 3 years. This year in preseason Parcells made sure Romo got lot more preseason game experience even to the extent of letting him play entire game against Seattle. Romo knew even before season started he get as much playing time as his performance warranted and whenever Parcells could get him in. Do recall that Parcells told Romo sometime before our game against the Giants to be prepared cause he might call on him.

As for other teams' fans saying we just got lucky, I simply say did NE get lucky with Brady, did Steelers get lucky with Rothesberger, did Dolphins get lucky with Marino, etc. They and us all get lucky but they and we were also smart enough to make sure these QBs were on our team. Why didn't other teams draft Brady, Rothesberger, Marino--none of whom were #1 picks? Why didn't the Commanders sign Romo--as we did?

The only thing not in our plans was that he would play like an elite vet QB in his first 5 starts. Just like NE, Pittsburgh, Dolphins' plans for their QBs were exceeded by the QBs themselves. Whenever a Commander who another teams' fan say we just got lucky, ask them why they didn't get lucky and sign him--an undrafted free agent out of Illinois which is a long way from Dallas.

this wasn't planned
It amazes me that people think this. He was given time and coaching to develop. I think a major part of the reason Quincy was let go was because of Romo. I know everyone thinks its because of a drug-related problem but that is illegal in the NFL. A player with a drug problem has to go through the proper procedure for release. By the next year Romo had taken over the #2 spot, but still wasn't quite ready to be put in, despite Sean Payton pushing for him to start.

Over the next two years multiple team offered first day draft picks for this guy but we refused. Instead, we started him for 90% of the pre-season snaps to get a real read on him in a real game. Everyone was predicting that he would start eventually this season, including Parcells himself. But no, despite all this perceived planning, we got completely lucky that Romo turned out to be good.

Must have missed the sticky I guess.

I wouldnt say Romo is lucky, I would say that the Cowboys coaching staff has put him in an excellent position to succeed at this point. Their game planning is matching his strengths, which is something I didnt see with Bledsoe. Not to mention the Cowboys D is really starting to gel and step up.

Eh....this topic could stand alone even without the ES link. As has been shown, some goofballs here even think we got lucky.

It goes back farther than that.

In 2003, we passed on Leftwich, Boller, Grossman, Plummer, Griese, and eventually thought Delhomme was asking for too much money. All because of what we had in the stable (which wasn't much) and because we signed Romo.

The sticky was more for those Ha-Ha threads where someone finds a non-Cowboy thread on ES or other football board and brings it back here.

This was more of legit Cowboy thread, regardless of its origin.
