There was enough time left in that game for Seattle to win it even if the field goal went through.
People forget this. It's often billed as the last play of the game when the media covers it.
There was about 1:10 - 1:20 left on the clock although Seattle had no timeouts. The defense had collapsed down the stretch that year, the previous game they gave up 39 points to the 2-13 Lions. It would be the last game for Zimmer as the defensive coordinator and the collapse led to the hiring a defensive minded head coach in Phillips. At the time in no way did I think that field goal was going to win the game.
I think the best chance for them to win was to either score a TD on that drive or stop Alexander after Seattle took over. Alexander ripped off 20 yards on his first play, and that was enough to drain the clock so that Romo had no chance by the time he got the ball back.
If I was to blame Romo on that game, it wouldn't be for the bobble. They only managed 13 offensive points against a depleted secondary. He managed the game well enough but they really needed to generate more points. No interceptions but only around 6.5 ypa.
Some of that was probably Parcells reigning him in as he was extremely turnover averse. But I also don't think Romo was the same player he would later become. 2014 Romo probably wins that game by double digits.
