I don't know, when you read things like, " could cause loss of motor skills" that's an issue for him to think about as it could affect how he lives after football. Not good if his wife thinks the same.

Not taking sides in the Romo debate but this doesn't sound good at all. Romo wasn't himself before the Washington game even though the stats don't show it. I like Romo but we need to draft a QB somewhere around the 3rd round and hope for the best....

Good post.

I know it was not the OPs fault but the Thread title (taken from the actual article title) is a bit misleading.

I changed it around some. Even though at the end of the day there was still an additional complication found.

“We feel really good about the procedure he had, we feel really good about the rehabilitation program he’s going to be on, and we feel like there is a great history of players coming back from this kind of surgery,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Tony is going to work very hard at it, and it’s really important to him to come back and be better than ever.”

the reporter went on to say:

garrett didnt use the words "fantastic", "process", or "stacking" even once

the only other times in recent memory when garrett has gone through an entire presser without using them would be never (although that is usually the case in "one on one meetings" with jerry)

these facts lead us to believe that Garrett was severely stressed when explaining Tony's situation

I't a process of stacking good vertebrae over good vertebrae.

The doctors can give him a better idea of the risks but loss of motor skills sounds pretty serious. I don't want to see him crippled for the rest of his life and would prefer he retire if the risk is high. I'll miss the guy though if it comes to that

There are a lot of posts in here that make me wonder how many just read the thread/article title and not the actual article.

You didnt have to read this article to know 2 back surgeries in 9 months is a big deal. It takes its toll. And you start having problems with the fluid between bones and you decline in a real hurry.

I know he can come back just fine in 2014 but Jerry has to get the QB of the future sooner than later!

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) – Tony Romo lurched slowly around Valley Ranch on the Monday following the end of the Dallas Cowboys’ season, attending the year’s final team meeting as a gesture meant to provide fellow players an emotional lift after failing to secure a playoff berth.

But that will be the only sort of “lifting’’ Romo will be doing for a while, as sources say the three-to-four-month recovery period for back surgery is a result of the herniated disc procedure he underwent on Friday that may have revealed an additional complication: a rupture of jelly-like “disc material’’ into the spinal canal.

That “material’’ in the spinal canal can cause pressure on the nerves in the spine and a chemical irritation of the nerve roots. That can mean pain and a loss of motor skills – both clearly factors in the decision to give up on a “miracle’’ comeback for Romo, who played with this condition at the end of the Week 16 win at Washington but, even after receiving treatment and a steroid injection, could not function during the week before the Eagles finale – and therefore, the decision to undergo surgery.

<snipped>

That's just standard findings and procedure for this diagnosis. Does not represent complications currently or in the future.

He still has good prognosis for full recovery.

Then, there is this from the article:

"The Cowboys insist that this surgery is unrelated to last spring’s “cyst removal’’ that was performed on May 22 and kept Romo from practicing with the team until July 22. But in fact, sources say that operation was “spine-involved’’ as well (likely a partial discectomy to remove disc pressure on a nerve)."

discectomy disc·ec·to·my (dĭs-kěk'tə-mē)
n.
The partial or complete excision of an intervertebral disk. Also called discotomy .

I know it's the title of the article, but can we get a title change on the title please? The article was obviously titled to get eyeballs by inducing false fear, no reason to continue that on the board.

that surgery was not 'good news' for Romo or Cowboys. The story simply states the surgeons had to repair ruptured annulus (true definition of herniated disc) instead of fixing bulging disc (where disc annulus remains intact). Remember surgery is always a last resort and that conservative treatments didn't work. They will find out in next 6 weeks if the pain has been resolved. Then its onto rehab and ultimately finding out next season if the back can hold up for 16 games. I don't see how he can go thru full season with his back and a more idea situation is for him to split time with another QB and IF Dallas were to get into playoffs you might still have Romo for those games.

if romo retires, is his contract voided or does it still count against the cap?

Think Dallas has no choice but to go QB early. You have to plan for the future. And the future is here faster then they thought it would be.

Agreed, but the likelihood of that actually happening is wishful thinking at best.

And that is the result of shortchanging the OL for so long and having an offense that does not protect the QB by simply running the ball.

I don't believe Romo will recover fully. He was off on more throws than normal this year, especially the deep ball, and I believe that's a physical issue. That will only get worse from here.

Agree. He was missing some throws he normally makes during the last few games

Anytime you have an injury around your spine there is risk of losing motor skills.

I asked this question in another forum and a "cap guru" there's says that tony retiring is the same as being cut. Said it be better for team to cut june1 then he can retire .. But I'm no cap guru.. Just repeating what I heard and the guy could be TOTALY full of ****, but yeah this is a good question.

I disagree. It seems like Romo has had successful surgery for an issue which had plagued him throughout the year--a year which he had a pretty good season despite the injury. He should be even better next year.

Opinion of someone who rehabbed a herniated L4/5 disc: The unfortunate bottom line is that a ruptured, herniated disc means the low back is permanently weakened and vulnerable no matter how much rehab occurs. Could he play? yes. Could he play well? Yes. But the risk is substantial. The injury will shorten his career and just one slam to the turf could potentially end his career. Given the importance of body balance and leg strength in throwing, the injury is a GIANT hurdle to overcome.
