Romo: What does he need to do to get better?

For me, i worry that Romos arm isn’t strong enough on the deep passes. And that his arm wore down at seasons end. I guess what id like him to do is NOT overwork his arm in the offseason.

Ball security. If he gets that down, I think he'll be pretty good.

I think he needs to work on his accuracy when he rolls out or has to scramble. I saw too many passes get away from him last year when he was on the move. But it is something he can work on and get better at.

And not be afraid to tuck it in and run with it when everyone is covered ala Staubach and Aikman. Or just go ahead and take the sack if there is nothing else to do. He lost too many of them last year trying to make something happen.

I can't belive I missed this

go ahead and take the sack? are you crazy? not you gryphon, but idiot wyley60 over here

Sometimes taking the sack is ok.

Would you rather have him force it into coverage and throw a pick? One that is possibly returned for a TD?

There's certainly something to that...

I think it's part Romo part the game plan. God almighty our game plans were conservative (for the most part) in the first quarter... no wonder we fell behind so often. It was run, run, pass or pass, run, run or run, pass, run all the time.

I think that is, and hopefully was, part of it.

I also wonder if he is just the type of person that is too hyped up and has to settle down some to get into the swing of things.

Does anyone buy this crap about Brad Johnson not being Tony's mentor?

1.Secure the Ball.

2.Become more comfortable in the pocket. Last year when teams started containing him in the pocket and not letting him improvise his game went down hill. He needs to make plays from the pocket.

3. Learn to take what the defense gives you.

4. Listen to Jason Garrett and Brad Johnson.

That is the biggest thing.

He has to realize that he does not need to take the team on his shoulders and do everything himself.

Too many times he had made plays of desperation that resulted in turnovers and making the situation worse. There are other times when he did things he should NOT have done but got lucky and it did not hurt us.

That gunslinger mentality has to be tempered.

He needs capable blocking.
He needs disciplined receivers to run their routes.
He needs Jason Garrett.

If you thought Romo showed streaks of greatness last season, wait till he goes into this new season as the starter.

He'll be great.

And you can take that from the 50,000-watt nerve center of accurate truth, plausible logic and undeniable pluck and moxie.

Indeed. Even when it just means scrambling for a few yards. I mean damn, not every play has to be a 1st or a touchdown Romo. Get a short completion, throw it away, or RUN.

Romo needs to look for his check-down receiver more often, that will reduce the times he holds onto the football, and will reduce the chance for sacks and fumbles, which brings me to another point, Romo needs to hold the ball at the proper height when scrambling w/ it, instead of holding it down and out
:hammer: agree 100% Those fumbles looked damn close at times - scary ****

It's not about what Romo needs to do. Certainly he needs to improve his TD-TO ratio, all those fumbles are unacceptable. But as a QB, in your first year starting (regardless of NFL tenure) this is as good as it gets, people. What does Romo need?

1. A more consistent running game. Romo was the BEST QB in the league last year on 3rd and 6+. He completed an astonishing 70% of his passes on those downs. Even so, we shouldn't be putting him in those situations so consistently. We need a RB who will fight for those yards early in the downs, and put us in 2nd and 8, 3rd and 5 situations instead of 2nd and 12, 3rd and 9 situations. Whether that's Julius or not, we'll see.

2. More consistent pass blocking. It was very good in spots, but alot of times at the end of the year it just looked confused, and Romo was forced to improvise. Granted, he's very good at it - he just shouldn't have to. Watching guys like McNabb and Peyton just sit back there for seconds on end, hopping and patting to find the wide open receiver makes you awful jealous.

3. More time in the same offense. Don't change things. This is another staple of successful QBs. Keep Sparano around, and allow Garrett to simply tweak things, not overhaul them. A QB who has to think about what he's doing out there is not going to be effective.

He's not perfect, but he's about as good as it gets. We're all still skeptical, but IMO it's far less about what Romo needs to do, and more about what the team needs to do for Romo.

Have better starts to games. Romo often takes to long to get going. You wonder why he needs to make those 4th quarter heroics? It's because he was off in the first half.

Once he's in rhythm, he's pretty good, but he never starts on fire.

That is why people have the comparison to Favre.

It is remarkable, really.

Like Favre, he needs time to settle down in games because he is so excited.

I would recommend yoga or meditation for him. If there was one thing I would change about him is that he develops the ability to calm down and of course, don't feel like he has to get a super play each and every time.

Take what the D gives you unless the game situation ABSOLUTELY demands other wise. Getting greedy, trying to make big plays all the time never works.
Self control. Maintain an even strain.

Better O line play would help a lot.

Option #3 - throw it out of bounds

And what is really interesting to me is that once he settles down, he has a cooler head than much more experienced players in pressure situations.

This is something to watch, IMO. No one knew at first how much the offense would change. I thought it would just be tweaks after fielding a top offense and seeing the good job Sparano did last year, but it sounds like there are some pretty significant changes. We'll have to see how quickly and how well Tony *and the WRs* pick it up. I have a feeling it won't be totally seamless.
