Romo's Play

It's hard to point to Romo and say that his play is poor. I mean, he has posted better numbers every year and we have had success as a team, even if it was not the level of success we have wanted as fans.

However, one of the things I absolutely believe has gone down hill, these past few years, are the mechanics of Romo. He has so much natural ability that he makes you forget about this but, I just watch Romo and I see him making decisions or sailing the ball or whatever it might be and I can't help but wonder if it was a bad decision to get rid of a QB coach. I know he works with Garrett and Garrett believes that he can do it but honestly, I do believe that Romo has regressed just a bit in this area. I know there is a fine line between restricting too much and not enough but it just seems as if Tony could benefit from this. It was talked about when we first let Wade go but it really hasn't been discussed much since. I wonder if it is time to revisit this. Lord knows that Garrett had better figure something out because we are not seeing the results we should be from this offense IMO.

The INT for Miles was on Romo and so was the INT to Witten IMO. He threw medicine balls to both Roy and Witten. I know your going to get hit but it just seems as if we are seeing a lot of throws that are resulting in negative results. Could be the result of how many times we are throwing but I just wonder if a QB coach would help focus things again?

I'm wondering if Romo is as good as he is going to get.

I mean he started out slow, sat the bench a while before playing.

And then after starting he progressed, but now seems to have leveled off.

I guess he was an undrafted FA for a reason. Not saying this is his fault, he is doing well enough for us to win. I just don't know if he can take us where we want to go despite our other weaknesses.

Like I mentioned in August, the O-Line and our FG kicker will limit what we do this season, .. not Romo.

He is definitely good enough if everyone else is doing their job.

I think he's played well. Some of his passes have been a bit off but I can't think of a single QB in the history of the NFL who ever had every single one of their passes be on the money for their whole career.

Even the great Peyton Manning has some bad throws at times. It's part of the game. Romo has things to work on, for sure, as all QBs do but I'm not upset with the play of Romo.

Yeah, you have to wonder why we have no QB coach ? If your owner/GM really wants to win, why would he cut corners on the coaching staff.

Romo is at his best when he can throw intermediate length pass patterns, sprinkle in some deep stuff and then check down to some short stuff. He also works best when he can roll out and throw or even better, when he gets to step up into the pocket and fire. Instead we've become a short pass offense that doesn't scare anybody deep.

we dont even try to get the ball to our receivers early. its just checkdowns and stuff...

you see the real offense when we're about to lose and the sense of urgency comes back to the team...

Romo is the least of my worries. If he has a problem than he'll fix it. He always does.


If I had 1 complaint about Romo its that he bought into being a mistake free QB so much that it has stopped him from doing what made him special in the first place and thats making plays with his feet.

The darn shotgun is killing him. Garrett is so in love with the shotgun, he doesn't realize it puts the OL and Romo at a disadvantage. There is not threat of run or play action. The defense knows a pass is coming and has nothing else to worry about. Romo gets no roll outs or anything. You look at Brees and Schaub and play action is their friend. Not here and not for Romo.

When I watch our Offense Rich, I don't ever get the sense that we have a good idea of what we are supposed to be. We have a pounding back that we never use to pound with. We have a game breaking back that we never get out in space and throw the ball to. We have 3 WRs that could all stretch the field but we never do that with any of them. We have two TEs who we could pressure the seam with but we never really do that. We have the biggest OL in the NFL but we are throwing the ball, dinking and dunking 50 times a game. It's like we have no identity on Offense. Honestly, I don't know if our guys know who or what they are supposed to be in this offense?

Ever heard that old song by Johnny Cash about building his own car. I'm really leaning toward the reality that the individual parts are fine and dandy but they just don't fit together as expected.

I got up this morning thinking about it and came to a conclusion that Romo's going to be really good and outstanding, in the way that some of the other greats and household names became that way and thats piling up yards ,completions,percentages and anything else that you can think of to impress and make a mark in the book.
Fouts,Marino,Kelly,come to mind off the top of my head.
I hate to say it but I am resigned to just enjoy his body of work and think of the "what ifs". Just my opinion,and it will help me cope.

And he does that stuff really well off the play action ... but unfortunately you have to actually run the ball for a defense to respect play action.

Romo is a little off, no doubt. I think he will correct.

My problem is with the defense right now. I know, I know, They hold oppnonents to low scores. But, then, sometimes, you get what happened yesterday.

This defense, while good, never gets a turnover it seems. We all see it every Sunday, from other teams, of course. The defense will come up with a pick for a TD, or just a pick, maybe a fumble recovery? This seems to never happen with Dallas. Jay Cutler, interception king, right? Yet, yesterday? None, Zilch. Notta. Maybe Jay was just on yesterday, or, because of Dallas laying back on defense, either way, no turnovers. That is unheard of for a team that is "supposed" to be Super Bowl ready.

Defense has some playmakers on there, just not in the backfield. Maybe someone will step up, I hope they do. But, I have been watching this same movie for years now.

Somethings gotta change.

Romo is off, but his OC does him no favors. He gets no running game, no playaction passes, no roll outs ... none of the things that he naturally does well. Teams have figured out Garrett's one trick shotgun/draw. When he starts to get into a rythym he gets pulled so Garrett can show off his new Wildcat play or 3 RB option set that he drew up on the chalkboard.

Romo's play needs to improve. He needs to be great, not good enough, but great in order of us to win. The team is falling apart if not already fallen, and him being the leader, he needs to take this team and rise them up with his play.

When its 3rd and 6 with a chance to score, he needs to hit the receiver in stride and not panic. When the coach is asking him to throw 51 passes, he needs hit not miss on the most critical times.

Is it too much to ask of him? Probably. But, what other option seems more plausible right now?

totally agree. He's the kind of player that has a better grasp on both what the defense is doing and the pulse of the offense.

Perhaps I am in the minority here but, I don't really think that Romo needs to play Pro Bowl type football. I think he needs to be a good Pro QB. To me, there is a difference there. Stop throwing pics, stop going for spectacular plays and take good plays. An example might be the throw that he tried to go to Witten on in the middle of the field when he had a guy shorter that was completely open. The throw to Miles that created the TO. Not directly Romo's fault but if that ball is thrown a little lower, it's not a TO. Towards the end of the game, when we are trying to score, Romo sails one out of the back of the EZ. Not a great pass but he looked down at the check down (Barber I believe) who was wide open, could have just checked it down and Barber could have picked up the 1st down and gotten OUB but Romo elected to go for the TD right there on a terrible throw. On that same pattern, he had a guy intermidiate, maybe 20 yards down field also open. I think it was Dez. You have to make the smart play.

We don't need a Pro Bowl QB. We need a good Pro QB. If we don't commit TOs on Sunday, how many points do the Bears actually score on us? We have a defense that is good enough to win games for us. We simply need to play good smart offense and take shots where we can. We have a good enough running game to make teams respect it. We have good enough Receivers that, eventually, will beat there guy. We can win if we just play smart football. We don't need this other stuff. Romo can be that QB. He has been before. Just play smart. We need our OC to call a game that will help our lights out defense an not hurt it. When you have the kind of defense we have, you don't rely on them to save your bacon every drive and just take that many more chances on offense. You play high percentage football and you put your defense in the best possible position to be successful. Play field position. We will eventually score if we allow our defense to do what they do well. Heck, neither defense we have faced thus far is better then ours and we have lost both times. Why? Turnovers, penalties and too many shots at our defense. Just play smart football. That's kinda how I see it.
