Romo's "new" technique

From OTA footage, he looks like he is hitting receivers in stride and (dare I say it) his release looks even faster. Is it possible that Romo is going to be even better than last year. Obviously, there is always room to improve. But I'm talking about things that would have been impossible for Romo to do last year.

What do you think is going on?

Most starting QB's in the NFL are going to be hitting receivers in stride. The pads aren't on, and they dont have a real defense pressuring them.

That being said, I'm not saying Romo didnt improve. But its only an OTA.

I'm hoping he did improve, mostly with his decision making. 19 picks is too many. I want no more than 15 next year. Max. I'll take less touchdowns, but less picks.

It's hard to believe Romo could be even better this year. Most of 07 season he played at a HOF level & was 2nd only to the record-setting Tom Brady (best season of Brady's career) in the NFL--and in only his first full season as a starter. Anyway, many starting QBs improve a little each year in their first 2-5 seasons as they hone their skills, offensive scheme better adapted to fit them, more familiar/read NFL defenses better, addition of good receivers & better OL play & improved running game.

We all know Romo has room to improve despite his great play. Cutting his INTs down to less then 15 is a good start so he's gotta work on his decision-making but frankly that will come as he gains more more game experience--but was very evident in the Buffalo (5) & 2nd Eagle game (3) & in playoff loss when he got caught behind the LOS for 2 big losses. Finally, he's also got to step up his play in last month of the season/playoffs to match his great play the rest of the season.

But that also holds true for the rest of the offense. Stop all those dumb pre-snap penalties; they killed us in at least 2 games (NE/Giant playoff loss) & almost cost us 1-3 others. Biggest culprits were Flozel/Colombo/TO & Witten. 11 penalties in playoff loss against the Giants who had 0 is ridiculous; believe we close to leading the NFL in penalties. Too many dropped passes in playoff loss--4; we all know who the culprits were. Our OL run blocking wasn't that good much of the season & OL play in 2nd half of playoff loss was poor.

Also some of us questioned the game plan on both sides of the ball. As a first year OC, Garrett will also learn from his mistakes as he & Romo enter their 2nd seasons at their jobs; also hope Houck gets better play from our OL & can develop Free/McQuistan/Marten into the OL they must become. Same goes for defensive side of the ball as Wade/Stewart enter their 2nd year as HC/DC.

Finally, did we expect too much from the Cowboys who went 13-3? While our offensive was #2 most of the year, our defense was #13 & our ST play was mostly awful to just plain poor. You can't win SBs when 2 out of 3 important team areas are weak; our fall-off late in season is noticeable because our offensive performance started playing like the defense/STteams.

This was an EXCELLENT post. I read this board every day and don't believe I've ever seen anyone accurately summarize this team's performance as well as this. :bravo:

If we do a better job running the ball this coming season Romo and the offense will not be stuck in 2nd or 3rd and long as often and keep the defense off balance instead of being in clear passing downs. That in and of itself will help cut down on the ints

Romo needs to pull out Parcells list of 11 things to be a successfull QB and improve on #7 and #11.

I know 5 pics came in one game but he has to have less than 19, for a while it seemed like he through at least 1 a game.

#11 speaks for itself

1. Ignore other opinions. When it comes to football - fans, family, media, they don't know what they are talking about.
2. Don't be the class clown
3. Fat QB's can't avoid the rush
4. Know your job cold
5. Know your own players
6. Be the same guy every day
7. Throwing the ball away is a good play (avoid turnovers)
8. Learn to manage the game
9. Get your team in the end zone (don't worry about stats)
10. Don't panic - stay calm
11. Don't be a celebrity QB

What do you think is going on?

he's always hit receivers in stride, that hasnt been much of an issue

he needs to cut down on the picks and missing on some easy ones and he's pretty much there

so of course its quite possible for him to be better this yr...he's only been a FT starter for less than 2 seasons...and while his overall numbers might not be better, his level of play may be

and like the rest of the team, he needs to learn how to finish a season...he's played pretty medicore in December just like the rest of them

He has thrown behind TO many times... TO has pulled some in.... and some he couldnt pull in.

Wasnt there a sure TD to TO that Tony threw behind him?

To say it hasnt been much of an issue.... its debateable.

Folks, we are talking about a QB who has a career passer rating of 96.5 - the highest career mark for PR is 96.8 (Steve Young).

That says Tony is playing at an outstanding level - expecting much more from him would be silly.

his comp% is outstanding and our receivers make alot of yds after catch...usually good indicators that he's hitting guys in stride

like I said, he misses a few too many easy ones, but he generally is very accurate

This is a very good analysis.

I would add that Tony needs to stop being Superman; at least as much. I don't want to see those miraculous plays gone. He just needs to be able to make better decisions of when and where he can pull those off. The scrambling is not just ok but great. The throwing the ball into a crowd has to stop. He just needs to make better decisions. Time will help that.

I love this. Parcells is quite a character. But the list is a good one albeit colorful.

Yes, he can do it. But as above he can't do it all; at least all the time. He has got to know when to give up on a play and throw the ball away. Do you guys honestly think Tony threw the ball away as much as he should have??

He can improve. Which is fascinating given the level of his play already. Less that two years and playing like that is incredible.

I would like to add... He needs to sometimes run with the ball (when its there).... it was there a good amount of times last year and he held his ground too long.

Those runs are gamechanging. I think opposing teams stopped anticipating his running abililty (well because he stopped) - resulting in shutting TO and the offense at times.

Only if he learns to slide or run out of bounds. We really don't want him get hit more than necessary.
