I don't really know, but if that decision's made I wouldn't care what we got back, or maybe even give another team a late pick. Because we will benefit big just getting his salary off our books. I think we can cut him though because his salary is no longer guaranteed though but I don't see Jerry doing that. So I would take what we can get just to clear salary. if we get a pick in return all the better.

Tony is a real competitor. I bet we see his deal reworked and he is traded to a contender or he gives it everything he's got to win the starting job next year. This is pure speculation with a lot of football left.

With a reworked deal, a 1 and a 3...or a couple 2's.

Tom Brady wouldnt get a 1st round pick, much less Romo.

I think he would net a second rounder in a trade. I dont think a team would give up a first at his age with his injuries, but I think a team needing a QB to be relevant I could easily see a team like NY gambling with a 2nd rounder.

2nd rounder and a conditional 2018 pick with the max being a 3rd

If Romo doesn't see the field this year and has an entire offseason to heal up completely, I could see a team trading a 2nd round pick for him.

If Sam Bradford (who doesn't have a great track record when it comes to his health) can get a 1st, then surely Romo could get a 2nd. I'd be willing to say that if another team loses their QB like Minnesota did, then a 1st wouldn't be too farfetched.

I would say he's worth a 2nd and maybe a conditional late round pick.

To me a good trade would be a 2nd with a conditional 2018 pick. We get a 6th in 2018 if he plays fewer then 8 games. A 5th if he plays more then 8. A 4th if he plays 14 ( in order to keep them from sitting him to save a pic ). An automatic 3rd if he is on the team by the beginning of the 2018 league year

Heck if Sam Bradford can fetch a 1st.. Romo and Brady should be worth that at a min.
Age is a key here. Bradford is 29. If he works out they have their QB for 7 or so more years. Romo or Brady would give you a QB for maybe 2

Age and desperation drove Bradfords price. Mainly desperation lol

If Romo doesn't see the field, I don't think he has much value. The Bradford trade comparison is irrelevant. That was a mid season trade brought on by the Viking's desperation. He would have never brought a first-rounder had the trade occurred in the offseason. In Romo's situation, I don't think anyone will pony up better than a 4th until they are certain of his durability. If he gets some extended PT, and can stay healthy, he may draw as much as a 2nd.

The best we could get is a 2 and a 4 or 5.

But that creates the problem of.....what do the Cowboys do for a backup QB? Moore? Sanchez? Showers?

I'd take another route first. I'd offer Romo the opportunity to be with the team for a very, very long time. If he will agree to reduce his contract to remain the backup for another 3-5 years, he will also get a coaching position during that time. I think Romo is exactly the type that would love to be a throwback player/coach. That would elevate his profile greatly. When he is done with that, he will seamlessly be elevated within the coaching staff. I'd even go so far as to promise him the OC position once Linehan leaves if he will agree to this scenario and wants to be a coach after playing. If he doesn't want to go this route, I would look to trade him on terms he is agreeable to and tell him he is welcome back as a coach anytime he is ready for that next chapter of his life.

The NFL rules don't allow the Player/Coach option. Romo could be a player on the active roster while also offering guidance and advice (like this year), but NFL rules don't allow the Cowboys to hire him as a coach and then bring him back as a player whenever they might need him...........Unless the rules have changed....:)

I suppose in the salary cap era, he cant be paid extra and separately as a coach but there is nothing anyone can do about your backup QB effectively acting as an assistant QB coach in meetings and practice. His salary for being the backup QB could be larger than typical and Jerry could justify it by saying he is basically another coach in the building. I know its not a likely scenario but I'd try that route before cutting or trading him.

The Cowboys definitely can trade him in 2017. I don't know how much Romo is allowed to re-negotiate his contract to make it easier for another team to take him on, though - someone with more knowledge of NFL contract shenanigans than I have would have to break that down for us.

Plenty of teams have huge cap space and no QB so it definitely could happen. Doubt the Cowboys could get much in return though, because Romo's age and injury history is going to scare people off.

Probably a 2nd rounder and some other picks UNLESS you get a really desperate team. Then maybe a late first rounder.

That would be a really dopey situation when one of your coaches is a better QB than the one you currently have on the field.
