Ouch -- let's just hope this run of the injury bugaboos doesn't continue unabated. It's the last thing we need. A repeat of what we had a couple of years back surely wouldn't help our cause. Gotta pray our luck will improve. We'll be up against it in Philly but this team has already proven they do well with their backs to the wall. It ain't hopeless nor over just yet.

yea but look at who is on D line is next week FLETCHER COX

sorry I don't bring in a rookie to face him

but if you do then we better have supreme confidence in him

Collins wasn't even active on Sunday which lends one to believe the coaching staff views Berny as their top backup at guard.

He may be the top backup but that isn't the reason he was active. He backs up all three interior positions. That's really valuable. I expect he starts and Collins is active as the BU

But I thought the team said he was day to day? How could this be possible?

See this is exactly why people take what's stated by the team with a grain of salt.

Cox will scare the pee out of any guard not named Zack Martin.

It will come down to a scheme (game plan) decision.

Collins was inactive on Sunday, that's why Bern stepped in for Leary.

Collins is listed as the LG backup

I can see both sides of this - I believe, no matter how Leary plays this year, he's gone. Collins needs reps eventually. BUT this is a win now league, if Bern is the better player and helps us win games, you have to start him.

I will understand both decisions. But I want us to win games.

It's week two, the division and or season isn't on the line, if Bern was better, he'd be starting somewhere instead of a utility backup on Dallas.....Collins is a top 15 pick not some spare, Leary can't go, then it's Collins job to take it and run with it with Berny backing up in case of injury or if Collins struggles.....Indeed, it's a now league, so it's NOW time for Collins to go to work!!

Groin injuries tend to linger, so, like you say, I'll take that day-to-day expression with a grain of salt. I'll be eternally grateful if he manages to return in a couple of weeks, perhaps more. Of course, much depends upon the degree of severity of that groin pull.

Okay, but that's not the argument. It's who the coaching staff feels can come in and produce until Leary gets back.

And go ahead and tell the 2011, 2012, 2013 Cowboys that early season losses don't impact you later in the season.

If I was the Cowboys staff, I would start the kid and keep Bern as the backup. If you lose Bern, you lose your backup center.

I don't think letting Collins make his first NFL start with Cox across from him is a good idea.

I don't see how a backup would be better than a guy considered one of the top 2 or 3 best lineman in this past draft. Plus he'd be in between too pro bowl players who are professionals in how they play, they'd have him ready to go.

Collins struggled with things like stunts in the preseason. It is obvious that physically he is really good; however, it takes time to learn to pick up stunts and blitzes.

LSU rarely passed. They were primarily a running team. Collins didn't have to deal with a lot of complex pass rushing issues in college.

I do think he would be better between Tyron and Fred than he was in the preseason playing next to 2nd and 3rd string players.

Even if he does not play OG in this upcoming game, he will likely get some snaps as a blocker on field goals and extra points. They normally use the backup OL on those. Just that little bit of action can help a young player get more comfortable playing in the NFL.

I believe Bernadeau is the swing guard/center for game days because Collins can't play center and is better at this point on the left side. I also believe since he practiced almost exclusively at left guard, Collins will get the call to start with Berny backing up all the positions (and ready to step in if Collins falters).

Great explanation.

To summarize - Collins is a better overall player, however, at least for now, Berny is much less likely to get Romo killed.

that is pretty much it. You do not start a rookie vs someone like Cox unless you have no alternative

Yes, it's a somewhat common dilemma for coaches when it comes to young players vs veterans, especially on the OL.

Often times on OL they eventually just have to put the young guy in the game even though he's not completely ready. It's hard for an OL to ever be completely ready with just practice and preseason games. Last year Parnell probably progressed almost as much by starting 7 games as he had in 4 years of practice.

Having said that, this week against Cox is not an ideal time to put Colllins in the game, IMO; although, Bern will likely struggle with him also.
