Ron Springs, a former Ohio State captain and Dallas Cowboy running back, was in a coma in a Dallas hospital last night because of complications from a Saturday surgery, a family friend told The Dispatch.

Springs, 50, had a cyst removed from one his arms, said John Johnson, who has had close ties with the family since Springs transferred to OSU in 1976 from a junior college.

Shawn Springs, Ron's son and a former OSU All-America cornerback and current NFL player, reportedly was at his father's side.

Ron Springs was diagnosed with diabetes 17 years ago. In recent years he lost his right foot and two toes on his left foot because of complications. He underwent a successful kidney transplant in March. The donor was his close friend and former Cowboys teammate Everson Walls.

I hope you pull through ron...god bless you and yours

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Ron, as well as your relatives and friends during this time. God bless you!

being an ICU nurse....I am sure the staff at the hospital are using everything at their disposal to help Ron pull thru this.

...be on him and his family. One less thing they needed in their lives.

My prayers are with Ron and his family. May God work His blessings once again!

Ron Springs -- Really bad news
Ron Springs, the retired Cowboys running back who received a kidney transplant from his friend and ex-teammate Everson Walls in February, is in a coma in a Dallas hospital.

I just spoke to another one of Ron's former teammates who has visited him several times and he reports the situation "is not good."

Ron went into the hospital to have a cyst removed from one of his arms and things went bad in surgery, his ex-teammate said.

Ron's son Shawn, a defensive back with the Washington Commanders, has left the team to be with his father.

Steven Dennis was just on 103.3 and he said Ron's heart stopped during the surgery and he never came out of the anesthesia. Said there's very little brain activity and he's on a respirator.

:( :( :(

Oh man, that sucks. And after all that he had overcome.

With little brain activity it's likely a family decision in next 24 hours.

That's too bad -

A very close friend has had a kidney and a heart transplant and feels like he is putting his life at risk every time they go in to do a biopsy to see how his heart is doing. Very scary.

Hi Thumper,

Man this pains my heart as he was one of my all time favorites. Probably not in the top 5 or 10, but I will never forget he was the best we ever had at running the middle screen. He was exceptional at that.

God Bless Ron and family and I pray he pulls through this. Walls was a true friend to him and I just hope he ends up doing better and lives a long life!

Prayers to Ron Springs, and his family. :(
