Guard Ronald Leary, who quickly became a Jerry Jones’ favorite last year at this time for more than just the $214,000 he was guaranteed as an undrafted free agent, is among the first-year players to be on the field. Leary spent most of last year on the practice squad before getting called up to the active roster with two games to play. He will have a chance to win a starting job this summer and the early rookie camp work will give him some extra work.

Wide receiver Tim Benford, guard Charlie Bryant, tackle Aderious Simmons, wide receiver Jared Green, quarterback Nick Stephens, long snapper Charley Hughlett, defensive tackle Monte Taylor, defensive end Ikponwmosa Igbinosun and safety Micah Pellerin are also expected to practice next week. This group either finished the year on the practice squad or was signed to futures contracts after the season ended.

Wide receiver Danny Coale, a fifth-round pick last year, is also eligible to practice but will sit out as he continues his rehabilitation from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered late last season.

Danny Coale: Never played a snap in the NFL; already has three head coaching offers.

I have a lot of interest in us developing some of these younger guys. Harris, Beasley, Coale. I wouldn't write any of them off.

Especially if we eventually move Austin. Developing these guys in your system for a long time makes a lot more sense than having to sign veteran free agents all the time.

I agree. And I don't write any of them off.

Good to finally get some real news on Coale.

Keep an eye on Ikponwmosa Igbinosun. He showed good athletic ability at the combine.

Does he really have a chance to win the starting job?

Yes, he does. He would have gone in the early rounds last year, but he has a degenerative knee condition.

Problem with Leary, he's only got probably 3-4 years in the league tops before that knee goes bone on bone and he's done.

Leary? Yes, they thought he was going to do it last year. Broaddus has said the tools are there he just needs to learn the tricks of the trade.

You really can't put years on that stuff. It could go tomorrow or he could have problems but still play for a dozen years. Tony Tolbert and Mark Schelereth had horrible degenerative conditions and they coaxed some really good years out of those knees.

That's not what I meant. The Cowboys are not great on having competition for roster spots and I didn't hear before about Livings/Bernie place being in doubt.

I can definitely see the Cowboys going with a lineup of Smith-Livings-Fred-Leary-Parnell.

Livings place came into doubt when it came out that the Cowboys changed their minds about restructuring his contract while they did restructure Bernadeau. That looks like a non-move that he may not make the team.

The same Broaddus that laughed out loud when Mickey asked him if Leary could be the answer at guard?

Anyone that believes Leary would have been an early pick last year if not for his knee has been drinking that Jerry-aid. There is absolutely nothing special about the guy, and if he becomes a quality starter in the league at any point, I'll be positively stunned.

Exactly. I only heard he had an early round grade from the Cowboys and we have seen what talent they have when it comes to grading OL.

I think Leary has a slim to no chance of starting this year unless injuries ravage the OL.

I don't know what he was laughing at since he has said it and he's said that the scouts/coaches/players he talks to have said it. He has said that holding legally is basically what he needed to learn. He had some line about he just needs to learn how to trip, clip, and hold without it being called. And this has been a constant since last season.

You're just wrong. Dallas had to pay a pretty penny to get him in here as a free agent, because teams lined up quickly after the draft was over. His knee condition was the only reason he wasn't drafted. Many had a 3rd round grade on him.

I'm interested in him and Adelious Simmons, just from that standpoint. Neither is liable to pan out, but they have raw ability.

I thought Matt Johnson would be able too practice

They don't want him to end up in a body cast before June 1st.
