The system was put in place for a reason. Teams play by these financial rules, and now we get to hear all these players talking about how they have "outplayed," their deals and want new contracts. How is a team supposed to operate long term when contract are not honored?
If a college team recruits specific positions and then in their mind that positionis good for 3 more years, that eans they may not recruit that position again for 2 or maybe even 3 years.(Im not talking college football, but other sports.) Now NCAA has opened up a huge can of worms, and you are about to see college teams destroyed by use of this "College Portal." Players are going to go to a school, and "Outperform," the school they went to, and put their name in the portal to transfer to a bigger school that is worthy of said players performance.
This is the current state of the NFL. Zeke, you were drafted with te 4th pick for a reason. The Cowboys didnt take Zeke hoping to get a decent player. No, they drafted him to get the guy they got, and the contract rules are in place that allows the team to do a little, somewhat, long term planning. Now what???? We are supposed to give Zeke a new deal and screw the team over for the next 2 years because he has played very well? Jalen Ramsey is another. 1st rd pick starting his 4th year. Looks like the Jags got a good deal... ooooops, nah, screw you Jags, we need to tear up his current deal and sign him to big bucks and screw up your cap situation.
Dak has been a 3 year starter and was a 4th rd pick.... who cares? So are you saying as a 4th rd pick you are just supposed to hold a clip board? What about the 1st rd pick that sucks? Do players say, yeah, Ive sucked, go ahread and tear up my rookie deal and you can redo it and pay me like an UDFA? I dont think so.
I expect the rules for contracts to get a serious make over in the next CBA, but for now???? To hell with giving Dak a anew deal. Is Cooper getting a new deal? Honestly, I like what the Steelers have done. They have said screw you player. We arent doing a new deal until the old deal is done.
