Rookie HCs in the Super Bowl era

Brian Schottenheimer is the 10th head coach in the Cowboys 65 year history and the 6th Cowboys head coach of the 21st century. He’s the 9th HC Jerry has hired in 36 years as owner of the Cowboys.

Schottenheimer is only the 3rd Cowboys HC who has never been at a HC at any level before becoming an NFL head coach. The two others were Dave Campo and Jason Garrett. (Chan Gailey had been a HC in college before becoming an NFL HC)

In the 57 years of the modern Super Bowl era, there are only two rookie HCs who have ever won a SB:
  • Don McAffrey, Baltimore Colts, 1971 won SB V against the Cowboys.
  • George Seifert, SF 49ers, 1989 won SB XXIV against the broncos.
There have been 12 rookie HCs in the 57 year modern SB era who have led their teams to a conference championship game. (If I missed someone, let me know) They are:
  • 1971 Don McCafferty Baltimore Colts (won Superbowl V over the Cowboys)
  • 1977 Red Miller Broncos (lost Superbowl XII to the Cowboys)
  • 1989 George Seifert 49ers (won Superbowl XXIV over the Broncos)
  • 1994 Barry Switzer Cowboys (lost NFC Championship to 49ers)
  • 1997 Steve Mariucci 49ers (Lost NFC Championship to the Packers)
  • 2002 Bill Callahan Raiders (Lost Superbowl XXXVII to the Buccaneers)
  • 2006 Sean Payton Saints (Lost NFC Championship Game to bears)
  • 2008 John Harbaugh Ravens (lost AFC Championship game to Steelers)
  • 2009 Rex Ryan Jets (Lost AFC Championship Game to colts)
  • 2009 Jim Caldwell Colts (Lost Superbowl XLIV to the Saints)
  • 2011 Jim Harbaugh 49ers (lost to giants in NFC Championship Game)
  • 2019 Matt Lafleur Packers (lost to niners in NFC Championship Game)
NFL History shows: It’s hard for a rookie HC to have immediate deep playoff success unless they inherit a team with recent playoff success. Brian Schottenheimer will inherit a team that has had recent regular season success but has won two wild card games in the last 7 seasons 2018 and 2021)

I mostly like what we have done this off-season so far. Schotty will have a better hand to work with than Big Mac had in 2024. But history shows being a rookie HC in the NFL has a learning curve.
The odds of shotty going to the SB gotta be something like a billion to one.

Im many, or even most of the cases a coach was just replacing a winning coach in the middle of an organizations great run (McCafferty. Seifert, Switzer and others). So I am not seeing Schotty having that parallel

This thread is just about NFL rookie HCs in the 57 yr SB era and what the history shows about their performance as a rookie. Schotty certainly is a rookie HC.

I never posted there, my man. Maybe you're thinking of The Ranch back in the day?
I never posted at The Ranch that I recall. Not sure why I thought you used to post there. It was sort of like Twitter in a way. This was way back anyhow. I must be thinking of earlier in the CZ days.

Cause you think that there is a lock and an easier way to do it by bringing in what do people say around here the retreads I mean what else is there you got guys like saving and Meyers and Chip Kelly and Bobby Petrino more recently I mean these were super head coaches they had head coaching experience at big colleges they failed in the nfl but a lot of people out here wish that some of those guys came here I remember the call for Myers and how the Jaguars were smarter than the Cowboys really huh how'd that workout..

I mean the Eagles hired Nick Siriani he has zero experience as a matter of fact he was more green in my opinion then Schottenheimer I looked at his resume recently just now I went to go look at what he did because he's the Super Bowl winner now he wasn't liked by a lot of people..

Did you not see the list that Bob showed you there are examples of them getting to championship games or Super Bowls in their 1st years that doesn't mean Schottenheimer will but don't hack like this lead don't give you much choice you either hiring someone green like oh I don't know the two coordinators that just got hired off of the Lions the coordinator I never heard of that one year is an OC that's now I believe he's the Jags coach he came over from Tampa Bay I mean you have Kelly Moore first time in New Orleans and shot Heimer I mean I betting you think those other guys are better even though they're also first time in coaches they're all so green and they're not owned by the Dallas Cowboys..

That's the irony around here you see Dallas does something different no Dallas made a choice they could have made a run at Bill Belichick but he would have been a retread it has been on the downside of his career or a guy like Pete Carroll..

I wouldn't have had any problem with them doing this but those are what people around here say jerry's is always looking for a retread you know less of a gamble guy no this is what it is around the NFL you either bring somebody that's green or you bring over a retread those retreads make circles around the NFL until they get out of the NFL we did that with Mike McCarthy mike Mccarthy was a pretty good head coach his downfall was trying to be an offensive coordinator and not firing himself around mid season last year...

So you show me this blueprint of can't miss prospects in the head coaching ranks because I could tell you it's be wrong I can go on forever but I won't this has already gotten too long I know they don't like it i'm rambling on but stop acting like Jerry Jones does anything different than anyone else in the NFL... He could have hired Dan Quinn but then he would have been accused of nepotism and being comfortable and liking his guys and getting a retread that had no success truly as a head coach but it's okay when Washington hires a retread...

I don't think Daboll or sirianni Who are the other two head coaches in our division they were green when they were hired and I believe Dan Quinn's a retread mike mccarthy was a retread so now Jerry's did his research and he's OK with BS right now I don't I don't see the difference I mean there is no cheat card there is no blueprint you just hope to get lucky when you make a hire..

Which by the way Jimmy Johnson was a very very green nfl head coach a lot of people criticized Jerry for doing that firing Tom Landry inserting his friend and history is on Jerry's side...

So how about we just see how this works out and then we could debate whether it was a positive or negative thing.....
Indeed.
