Tells you what the team thinks of him so far. You would think they would like to give him more work.
No..........
Not according to the coaches. In our blowouts, we don't play or NTs (Mazi or Hankins) very much.
Week 1 - Hankins 18 / Mazi 17
Week 2 - Hankins 10 / Mazi 11
Week 4 - Hankins 21 / Mazi 17 (And they were both on the field at the same time for a few snaps)

The only "heavy lifting" our NTs did was in Week 3:
Week 3 - Hankins 35 / Mazi 12

It seems once we get a 2 score lead, Quinn likes his passrushers / speed defenders in the game more than the Big Boys.

I'm thinking that the Cowboys have discovered that rookies tend to wear down during a 17-20 game season because they are more used to a 10-12 game season. It is better to lighten their load now when they are still learning and then play them more often towards the end of the season.

How do you even determine pass rush win rate? Most of these next gen stats are so damn subjective, it's almost pointless to use
Next gen stats are way more beneficial than the “he ran for 4.8 yard per carry” BS from the 1960’s

He was our first round draft pick and isn’t getting many snaps. He only got 17 snaps in a blowout. That ties for the most snaps he’s gotten all season. It’s obvious they’re not thrilled with how he’s performed so far or he would be playing more. The problem hasn’t been our pass rush. It’s been defending the run and that’s the primary reason Smith was drafted.
sigh....yep. And the 9'ers live to run the ball. So.........yeah.

He should provide some disruption to free up our pass rushers.
Thats not what teams use big DT's for though. There are only a hand full in the NFL that are good enough to be used in pass rush situations

Jalen Carter is one of them. I don’t follow college football and knew nothing about Smith but he was supposed to have some pass rushing upside.

“Smith's skill set is particularly beneficial as a run defender, but the nose tackle has visible pass-rushing upside. Smith has shown he can capitalize on displacement with rip moves up the A gap and pry into the pocket with his strength.”

DT it’s a tough position for rookies for some weird reason… Seems to take most of them a year or two..

25% win rate on 8 pass rushes is two “wins”. Let’s not blow this out of proportion but I’d like to see the 8 rushes and at this point will take anything that is good news at all.

My concern with Mazi ever since I saw him in the first preseason game is that he doesn’t look very strong or athletic and we were told he was incredibly strong and very athletic for his size. his balance seems poor. Hopefully If he improves a little bit each week he’ll play a nice role for us down the stretch. If not, I’m sure he’ll do better next year with a full year under his belt.

Jalen Carter was a top 5 prospect. Smith was a borderline first round pick. Big difference. There is a difference bewteen upside and ability. Smith right now doesnt have the ability to be an effective pass rusher. This was well known when he was drafted. The has the athletic profile to develop into one, but that isnt going to pay off in 2024. If he was a capable pass rusher right now, then he would have been a top 10 pick

There were some fans on the board during the draft, claiming Smith was better than Carter. Lol I haven’t been happy with the pick so far. We have a long way to go with Smith. We’ll see how this season plays out with him.

Well some people can never admit that the Eagles got a better player.

Smith is right in course for what is expected of him as long as you are rational in your expectations

I think some are looking at the production of rookie phenom Jalen Carter and naturally compare the two.

Have to keep in mind the difference between the two in that Carter was always predicted to be a plug and play guy that would produce immediately. Mazi will take time but it was an area of need that had to be addressed.

How so? Ypc is still a better measure than a subjective one
Because what’s really important is next gen stats will tell you that an average pass play is more likely to gain 9 more yards than the average rush play. And that a team who passes the ball 28-32 plays per game is 70% more likely to win than a team who runs the ball 30 times per game. The are the stats that really matter. The likelihood of success, or the rate of success should be what we strive to know and understand.

(BTW, these numbers are made up for the sake of argument) LOL,

He does. If a Dlineman regularly draws a double team, doesn't that help to free up pass rushers and/or LBs? Anytime 1 DL player ties up 2 offensive blockers that has to be a good thing, right?
An offense would not waste a double team on a defensive player who is not a threat! And Mazi draws a lot of double teams.
And Mazi is only going to get better.
