I read that the 2017 OL class was not as talented when compared to previous draft years. However, I wonder why Dan Skipper (ref below) was NOT drafted? He seems to have a great resume while playing in the toughest conference in college football.

Why do you feel he did not get drafted? He has great size. Was it character issues or maybe he is too tall for an offensive lineman.

Anyhow, I am excited we drafted this player and believe he can help our team potentially.

The Dallas Cowboys signed undrafted rookie free agent guard Dan Skipper of Arkansas.

The 6-foot-10, 311-pound Skipper took part in the Cowboys’ rookie mini-camp last week as a tryout candidate. The team signed him Wednesday.

At Arkansas, Skipper was a two-time All-SEC player, one of only six offensive linemen in program history to receive that honor. He was a four-year starter and played in 51 games with 47 starts (second-longest streak in program history).

He also made an impact on special teams, blocking seven field goals, just two off the Football Bowl Subdivision record.

The Cowboys will participate in organized team activities next week.

Check out the UDFA list from DC.com. Broaddus likes the OL guard they drafted too. Thinks he has a chance along with
Skipper.

Does he have a chance to make the team? He's a big guy to look over

Yes, you answered your own question. It is exactly the height thing. It puts him at a leverage disadvantage and most, if not all NFL teams feel that it will be too much of a challenge for him to overcome.

Cowboys are giving him a shot to find out.

The class wasn't highly touted as far as elite players go but it was ok after that.
Personally, I'm not so sure about Skipper. Could help on special teams right away though.

Height is certainly the bigger part of it, but he will also have to put on a lot of weight to compensate for his height. I think he is practice squad bound (if anything) which will give him time to put on that weight and learn the system.

Nice hearing from you again...all well? :starspin:

I actually like the guard Nate Theaker better than Skipper. If Theaker can show his stuff in training camp then I wouldn't be surprised if he is able to beat out Joe Looney on the roster. Apparently Theaker took some snaps from center in the rookie mini camp, so they obviously want him to compete with Looney.

I didn't see weight as being a huge issue. Despite his height, his legs aren't skinny. Strength training? Sure, I think they can all use that, but even at his height, I didn't see him as skinny.

Again, height is certainly the bigger issue, but at 6'10", 310 is not alot. The more weight he has, the harder it will be for the opposition to bullrush him and use his height against him.

Yea, bet you are right--I remember years ago we drafted approx. a 6' 9" Phil Posderick (sp?) and he did not help us much.

I'm not saying he shouldn't, I'm saying strength would be a bigger issue than weight. By the same token, if he's simply heavier, he's even less mobile.

Again, take a look at the guy's legs, for 6' 10", they're not skinny at all.

I'm not saying he can't, but I'm tempering my expectations. Maybe he spends a year on the practice squad?

By weight, I'm not referring to fat. He needs more muscle, which, to be fair, just about every player needs when making the transition from college to the NFL. That said, I'd say he needs it more than most...

I agree that he, and most all of them, can use more muscle.
