Rookie Offensive Lineman

By weight, I'm not referring to fat. He needs more muscle, which, to be fair, just about every player needs when making the transition from college to the NFL. That said, I'd say he needs it more than most...

Most of the BCS teams have weight and training programs only slightly less capable then NFL teams. A few like Wisconsin and maybe Iowa have programs just as good. BUT one has to remember these are young guys; maturation has its place in the process as well.

Bottom line though is how hard is he willing to work on it.

Agreed

When you watch his film, he consistently gets beat around the edge. And he "catches" pass rushers, as opposed to using his long arms as a weapon to keep them away from his body. He can be taught to use his arms better, but I'm not sure he has the foot speed to be an NFL RT.

I'm hoping that if they stick him on the practice squad and he has a full year of NFL weight training that Mike Woicik can make him shrink 6 inches.

Both of them are old enough to be your grandmother now. Set your sights for younger.
SOME women are like fine wine or even better Scotch. As they age they get better (at least to a certain point)

Have you seen pictures of them both lately? I suggest you take a gander or your goose will be cooked.

If he strengthens his entire core and builds steel forearms and vise grip hands, he might just be something in a year or so.

In the NFL, it's all about pad level for offensive linemen, you want to get under the shoulder pads of the defensive linemen to win the battle and at Skippers height at 6'10", it's pretty hard to get under the pads of a 6'5" defensive linemen, and when a defensive linemen can get under your pad level of a 6'10" offensive linemen, you've pretty much lost that battle...Don't think he can play guard at this level, bends too much and he's doesn't have great lateral movement but in space he can move and move people when he hits them, so they may try to develop him as a tackle..

As a tall man Skippers disadvantage comes into play when he stands up or is stood up straight. As long as he bends those knees and back he will do fine. The real problem is when a game grows into the 4th quarter and the O-line gets winded. Playing with the proper technique gets harder for Skipper and he gets beaten more often.

I read that the 2017 OL class was not as talented when compared to previous draft years. However, I wonder why Dan Skipper (ref below) was NOT drafted? He seems to have a great resume while playing in the toughest conference in college football.

Why do you feel he did not get drafted? He has great size. Was it character issues or maybe he is too tall for an offensive lineman.

Anyhow, I am excited we drafted this player and believe he can help our team potentially.

The Dallas Cowboys signed undrafted rookie free agent guard Dan Skipper of Arkansas.

The 6-foot-10, 311-pound Skipper took part in the Cowboys’ rookie mini-camp last week as a tryout candidate. The team signed him Wednesday.

At Arkansas, Skipper was a two-time All-SEC player, one of only six offensive linemen in program history to receive that honor. He was a four-year starter and played in 51 games with 47 starts (second-longest streak in program history).

He also made an impact on special teams, blocking seven field goals, just two off the Football Bowl Subdivision record.

The Cowboys will participate in organized team activities next week.
