I would have liked to have had him on those last 2 freakin' runs against the Ravens.

I agree with you there. Those two plays were Roy Williams specialties.

How great could this defense be if the Roy of old would somehow reappear.

Does anyone have any idea what happened to him?

He lost his intensity and his feel for the game.

When he was a rookie I thought he would be a future hall of famer.....what a shame.

We could have had Ed Reed the same draft Dallas got Roy "I can't cover" Williams

After all of the struggles we had at that position this year I can't believe people still want him gone. I understand he's too expensive for what he will produce, but he still has value to this team.

I'd like to see Roy get another year. He should play Strong Safety on 1st and 2nd downs (basically, obvious run downs) and should play the nickel linebacker (assuming we lose Burnett to free agency) in nickel and dime packages. Now he's playing every down and in not placed in positions he can't handle. Just my opinion.

We could have also had Tom Brady in about 5 different rounds. Everybody can say the same except the one team that took that player. I imagine there are a lot of teams that wish they had drafted Witten in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd round.

We save 2.2 by cutting him.

Chances are we'll ask him to take a pay cut that saves us that 2.2 million to keep him. He makes 6.+ mil next year and I could see a deal for 3 years with no bonus and a team and player option for year 3. 4 mil per next 2 seasons.

If he won't restructure I bet he is gone.

Think of it like this. That 2.2 mil would pay for us to tender 4 guys at the 2nd round level instead of the minimum (500 k each basically) and honestly probably all 5 RFA once all factors are considered.

Playing on 1st and 2nd downs for $6.6 mil in 2009? That's nuts.

And have him play the Nickel LB spot? He can't cover as a Safety so why would we want him on the Nickel in any capacity.

He doesn't fit the game today. It sucks, but it is what it is.

If he wants to play LB then let him go become a 4-3 WLB somewhere.

I just posted this on my blog earlier today.

-------------------------------

Since 2009 is all about changes I thought I would throw one out today that I really hope to see.

Safety Roy Williams playing somewhere else. He's just not the same player he was back in his first few seasons and the game has changed to where a Safety with no cover skills is a huge detriment to any defense.

I know it seems like I hate Roy Williams, which I have been accused of over 15,000 times in the last few years, but it's just that in my opinion he hurts the defense because he's an instant target for opposing offenses when they start game planning for the Cowboys.

Here's Darren Woodson on The Lunch Break...

Woody talks Roy and Keith Davis

The most important thing for me in there is when Woody says that no matter who mans the Strong Safety spot in 2009 the guy is going to have to be able to cover in some capacity.

I know we didn't get to see much of Roy last season because of the injury, but from what I saw in the preseason and the two games he did play in I can' say I saw anything that told me he was going to be able to cover any better that he did in the past.

And Woody's point about him being the cover guy as the Free Safety during his playing days just doesn't apply to today's NFL.

Maybe there shouldn't even be a distinction anymore about whether a Safety is playing the 'Strong' or 'Free' position.

It's starting to look like any defense in the league today needs two Safeties that are both multidimensional. Each one has to be able to bring the wood as well as be decent pass defender when they are on the field.
