I'd like to see Roy get another year. He should play Strong Safety on 1st and 2nd downs (basically, obvious run downs) and should play the nickel linebacker (assuming we lose Burnett to free agency) in nickel and dime packages. Now he's playing every down and in not placed in positions he can't handle. Just my opinion.
I doubt Roy will play any true linebacker. After six years in the league, I think it's time to turn the page on that one.

That said, I think the intentions they had for him were in line with the other parts. He was playing the first two downs and special teams. I think ST is where he broke his arm, tho. So who knows if he plays it next year.

How great could this defense be if the Roy of old would somehow reappear.

Does anyone have any idea what happened to him?

He lost his intensity and his feel for the game.

When he was a rookie I thought he would be a future hall of famer.....what a shame.

Remember, he had Stoops coaching his talent up in College. Other than Parcells, which was after Roy being exposed to losing every season and playing with clowns for several of his first years, what real coach has he had? We talk about coverage skills but who was here to teach him to an NFL until he was set in his way.

I remember reading college scouting reports that his coverage skills were not his best attribute but he was very solid in that aspect and would actually make plays on the ball once in the air. Roy's been gutting it out on raw ability for years and he's losing his passion in that regard as well because coordinators know how to expose his lack of technical ability. The guy was a hard worker and very coachable coming out of college.

Lack of coaching in the early stages of his career and a rough break up with Kelly Rowland hindered Roy. He was one of the best defensive players in the league at one point and represented what good football really was about early in his career.

Playing on 1st and 2nd downs for $6.6 mil in 2009? That's nuts.

And have him play the Nickel LB spot? He can't cover as a Safety so why would we want him on the Nickel in any capacity.

You're a Taylor Mays fan so you can't be that bad but.. a Safety's coverage responsibilities..deep 1/3 or deep 1/2..is much harder than a nickel linebacker's. A nickel linebacker is basically covering the middle of the field, 8 to 15 yards off the line of scrimmage. They either are spying the QB or have to cover any short pattern over the middle of the field. They have to be sure tacklers since usually they are the only line of defense against draws or the QB taking off.

Trust me, I get your frustration with Roy. I just want to see him in situations better suited for his skills. We badly missed his ability to stop the run. I also want to see him blitzing more.

I just can't imagine a world where Wade Phillips, who lost complete control of this team, gets one more shot and Roy Williams doesn't.

I'd like to see Roy with Wade actually coaching him. We saw how pathetic this defense was when Brian Stewart was coaching, and as soon as Wade took over, Bradie James started playing like a mad-man, though he still was average in coverage. It is quite obvious that Brain wasn't exploiting the potential Roy could have had on this defense.

I'm not suggesting that he plays a true linebacker spot. I am saying the "nickel" linebacker spot that Kevin Burnett plays (if Burnett is not re-signed).

Kevin Burnett is 6-3/ 227 and ran a 4.61 coming out of college

Roy is 6-0/225 and ran a 4.53 coming out of college.

I'm really just saying this may be a spot Roy can handle and keeps him on the field for more downs.

Mays is the answer bro!!! Tell me you wouldn't kick Roy out of the car without stopping if Mays could be had in the draft, lol.

And I know Roy would be 'down in the box' as the Nickel LB, but he's already proven he can't cover slow TE's coming off the LOS from a three point stance so we definitely can't rely on him to cover slot WR's crossing in front of him, RB's coming out of the backfield or TE's split out wide at this point in time.

Get me Mays!!!

we're not getting mays he's gonna be the 1st safety taking off the board unless a smarter gm takes a guy like William Moore who can actually intercept passes.

Think of it like this. That 2.2 mil would pay for us to tender 4 guys at the 2nd round level instead of the minimum (500 k each basically) and honestly probably all 5 RFA once all factors are considered.

Not 4 guys. Only one and a minimum for the other, but that's good enough. The DMN blog reported today that a 2nd round tender would cost the Cowboys a little over 1.5 mills this year.

Roy did nothing while healthy this year. I've never seen a team bend over backwards to hide a liability like this in my life. It would be one thing if he was a presence in the box, but he isn't. Again..0 tackles for loss in 2007 and no sacks. I doubt he even got a pressure, he became so tentative in the last 2 years that he can't fight off blocks from TE's or FB's. He is milking that ridiculous extension for all it's worth. We could get better talent for the saved $2.2 million and perhaps some upside.

Seriously. After 4 years of "We should do this with Roy" "We need to do that with Roy" "We're not letting Roy do what Roy does best" "Make Roy a LBer" "Roy needs a real FS next to him so he can make plays" "Roy just needs a better coach" .....

... maybe its just time to admit Rookie Roy Williams isn't coming back.

Just like Rookie Julius Jones never did.

I think the writing is certainly on the wall for RW38 as well... He's no leader and definitely not worth that contract dished out by Jerry Jones.

(Still pissed that he gave Hamlin that big contract as well)

We could have had Ed Reed the same draft Dallas got Roy "I can't cover" Williams

and 10 other teams could have DeMarcus Ware...every team in the league passed on Jason Witten 2 or 3 times each. Wonder what some RB needy teams are thinking right now after watching 4th rd pick Tashard Choice this past month?

Roy Williams was a concensus top-10 pick by everyone, and every socuting service/guide etc etc had him rated ahead of Ed Reed back then.

Maybe there shouldn't even be a distinction anymore about whether a Safety is playing the 'Strong' or 'Free' position.

It's starting to look like any defense in the league today needs two Safeties that are both multidimensional. Each one has to be able to bring the wood as well as be decent pass defender when they are on the field.
I agree. Gone are the days where a slow, un-athletic SS could just load up and lay the wood on players. Also, gone are the days where slow, tight ends were just considered small linemen- blockers that can catch the ball from time to time. Now tight ends are athletic and demand someone with equal or superior athletic skills to cover them. Also, more running backs are getting into the passing game. Teams simply cannot afford to have have stiffs at the safety position, and that is exactly what Roy has become.

I may be in the minority, but I am not overly impressed with Mays. He seems like an all-hype guy because of where he went to school. His stats aren't that jaw-dropping either. I would much rather have William Moore, a hard hitter that can cover, or Louis Delmas, a true cover safety....Delmas has Ed Reed potential.
