Roy's interception for a TD..

How can you know what they were talking about? I saw the players signaling tip -- but they expected there was a PI call.

It is FAR more likely that the refs were discussing the timing of the play -- that is whether Newman hit the WR before or after Roy made the pick because that would determine possession of the ball.

I don't know what they were talking about, that's the reason for the question marks. It's obvious they didn't know what they were huddling up for also because it was a bs call since they very seldom call this penalty.

I was out of town last weekend and had to watch the game at a bar, and I missed the first series of the game. Well, I just watched my tape and Holy Cow, what a terrible call. I didn't even realize that happened on the first play of the game, either. What a difference that would have made against a 2-13 team...

I found this on a Denver Bronco blog

However, cornerback Domonique Foxworth was penalized and will likely be fined for hitting a "defenseless receiver'' helmet-to-helmet. The rules book designates, in part, a receiver "defenseless if he has missed the ball and is not in position to defend himself from the tackle."

This whole thing about hitting a defenseless player and trying to determine if the guy led with his helmet is why the rule is ridiculous to begin with.
I understand the rule and the way they are explaining it and all that.
It still doesn't change the fact that the rule is wrong to begin with.
Football is a game of collisions and when Trent Green is knocke out for 6 games by a defender and nothing is called and then we get what happened last Sunday to us?????
The refs are not consistent in how they call this rule. That's one reason it shouldn't be in the game and the most obvious reason is because it makes it impossible to play defense now.
It's a stupid rule...get rid of it!

It Had To Be The Worst Call Ever......

The Refs Are Ruining The Game......

Exactly...

The problem is that some of the NFL officials (braindead) seem to think players can just hit the brakes and hold up when they're in the process of delivering a hit or making a tackle. How in the hell is a DB supposed to know whether the receiver is going to make a catch or not when he's already in the process of delivering a hit. That was a terrible call and there's no one on earth that stands any chance convincing me otherwise. Not only that, it completely changed the complexion of the game right off the bat.

That's not correct. You can hit a receiver who is airborne, you just can't make helmet-to-helmet contact.
I do think that was what the ref was calling, he was just full of crap.

From NFL.com:

Digest of Rules

Summary of Penalties

...
15 Yards
13. A tackler using his helmet to butt, spear, or ram an opponent.
14. Any player who uses the top of his helmet unnecessarily.

A couple more, just for fun...

15 Yards (and disqualification if flagrant) 8. Palpably unfair act. (Distance penalty determined by the Referee after consultation with other officials.)
 Does that mean it can be tasted? :)

15 Yards and Automatic Disqualification
1. Using a helmet (not worn) as a weapon. (The "U" rule)2. Striking or purposely shoving a game official.

That's just silly. They seldom call the penalty - which is why they huddled up -- to get the enforcement clear. As far as enforcement that's a pretty complex call b/c of the INT - that's something that happens maybe once a year. The refs huddle up in those situations to get the call correct.

They certainly don't huddle to discuss whether there was a penalty - that's 1 guy's call, the other refs aren't in position to make the call.

It was a lame call -- but to say the refs didn't know what they were doing is ignorant. Its a bang bang play -- the refs don't get replay on a call like that and you can expect they will make calls you don't agree with sometimes.

The penalty is unecessary roughness -- the defenseless receiver part comes from the rules committee -- every year they clarify rules and enforcement -- I believe this clarification came around 2002ish.

'Doing your job, Number 41, defense, 15 yard penalty; first down'.

Bs call.

:hammer: X1,000,000

The WR went for thr catch, defelected off his hand, protected himself, and got hit hard.

Forget the rules. This happens all the time.

We got the shaft and everyone watching that game knew it.

Isnt there an E in it? :)

Stupid Lions anyway.

Should have threw the game for the draft implications.

No joke. Can't see the forest for all the trees.

If that one play determined the game, against one of the worst teams in football; than there are certainly bigger problems in Big D than I presume.

Its just another take away + TD to add to his stats so guys like me can use to defend Roy Williams.

Also... the call was indeed BS and I'd feel a lot more comfortable knowing that refs can make good JUDEGMENT - UN - CHALLENGEABLE calls.

Thats just me though.

PS. I would never blame a game on 1 plays. They are 60 minutes long for a reason.

I understand the math.

And I think it was a close call that could have went either way. Unfortunately for the Cowboys it went the way of the Lions.

And your P.S., thumbs up. There is not one single play that makes a game unless in a sudden death overtime situation. But even then if the game was that close the team should have been expecting it.
