cap hell does catch up to you eventually. eventually you get some guys who say "screw you" when it comes to taking a paycut -- and then it is all over

When has that happened to the Redstinks? Because I have not seen it!!

No team that I can recall recently has ever won the Superbowl by building in Free Agency. The Skins keep trading away their picks and picking up guys that are always on the other side of their rookie contracts. The problem is two-fold.

First... you end up with very little depth behind your starters. Superbowl teams can take one or two major injuries and still perform well. Look at Pitt last year at Running Back. The Skins are very thin across both lines, LB, CB, and Safety. To get under the cap this year they cut several vets in those positions.

Second... It generally takes guys one or two years to really start to excel in a new system. Picking up unrestricted free agents means you are getting guys that already have between around 5-6 years in the league. Adding two more and you are dealing with guys that will only have 1 or 2 years of peak performance for your team. After that they are sliding down the wrong side of age 30.

I'm not saying that the skin's haven't improved this year, but they continue to do so at the expense of developing new tallent. That is their "cap hell". To always be one injury away from a 45 year old Starter. I don't think there is anyway the Skins could have dealt with the injuries the Cowboys faced along the Offensive line for instance (Rogers and Flozell). Cornerback might have been their deepest position last year (after QB) and even there they were exposed. The same is true for SS (where they were the worst in the league), DT, DE, and WR.

Is that when year 3ish comes, they start to restructure the contracts?

Somebody has to be first at it though right? I know what you mean about excelling but thats why you target people who have the skillset for your schemes or have been in the same or similary ones before. As far as depth in the secondary, what team were you watching? They only had 4 DBs on the roster and were starting Jimoh half the time with Springs, Rogers, and Harris nicked at times....they had to use safeties as CBs they were so thin. And they still are after losing Harris so we'll see if they shore that up or we can run rampant on them with or without TO but with him? i'm salivating although i hate that cancer and don't want him here.

no kidding, look at the Archuleta contract vs Dexter Jackson...talk about Skins getting ripped off. I wouldn't have wanted Arch if he would've came here for free. He's another SS, we have two of those, or three, already.
I wouldn't rank Arch in the top 10 S's in the league, yet he is now the highest paid.
Someone needs to sit lil Napoleon down and explain to him that he's cool to sign every player he wants, but he's destroying the entire market by handing out stupid contracts on a whim.

Anyway, I'm convinced that the skins will never enter "cap hell" as everyone keeps predicting. Its still suspicious though how there isn't another team out there in 31 or so that spends like they do, even when other teams have tons more cap space, as is usually the case.
Anyone else think that if the Dallas Cowboys were doing what Wash is regarding signing every free agent to ludicrous contracts and scamming the salary cap...that the league would come out with a new rule against it?

If we don't get better on offense quick, we won't be able to score too many points against the skins. Seriously.

Starting the season they had Springs and Harris (both starters) along with a high first round pick (Rogers) who was thought to beat out Harris eventually. Jimoh was only supposed to be depth. Considering the Skins like to use Taylor instead of a 3rd CB, I think it's fair to say that was percieved to be an area of depth. And anyway, I wasn't saying you were deep at CB, just that you were deeper there than anywhere else except QB. You migth have a case for saying you were deeper at TE too, but for the most part the point holds. Last year you weren't really deep anywhere, and it showed when you had to replace guys (such as with CB).

Clayton said that if the Skins signed Carter, they would drop out of the Abraham sweepstakes.

I remember in 2000 they made that big mistake and signed a bunch of has beens like Deion Sanders and Bruce Smith, and nothing came out of those signings. This time around they're signing a lot of young talented players...

Its going to be really interesting to see how they produce this year.
