I don't have access to some of the stories I've seen. Mostly because they were on scout.com. No need to waste my money just to see the blurbs. But I found another today where his name was linked to a DC position.

Granted, most of the stuff I've seen has been all speculation, but his name has popped up in a bunch of places. Looks to me like he's trying to get back in the college game.

Chizik building his staff
New Auburn coach Gene Chizik continues to be methodical in building his staff. He has added Curtis Luper as running backs coach, Trooper Taylor likely as wide receivers coach, Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator and Jay Boulware as special teams coach. Luper and Taylor came from Oklahoma State, Malzahn from Tulsa and Boulware from Iowa State.

Chizik also retained linebackers coach James Willis.

Auburn's defensive coordinator spot remains open. The names that keep popping up are Minnesota defensive coordinator Ted Roof, Kansas State co-coordinator Vic Koenning - who was at Clemson this past season - and Georgia defensive line coach Rodney Garner, who turned down a chance to join Tennessee's staff.
Other names to watch are Dallas Cowboys linebackers coach Reggie Herring, whose son is a linebacker for Auburn, and former Houston Texans secondary coach Jon Hoke, who used to be a coordinator at Florida. In addition, keep an eye on South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.

I'd hate to lose him. I heard a lot of good things about him this year. Changing coaches yearly is rarely a great thing. Still, I wish him well.

Well considering how he left A&M hanging after only being with them a few months, I'm not surprised he'd consider leaving so soon. Doesn't mean he is, but it wouldn't surprise me if he does.

Why are our coaches still getting plucked after a dreadful performance. Why not pick on Miami.

I hope not, too. I really liked him on Hard Knocks... He seemed like the fiery, no-nonsense kind of guy you need as a LB coach. And our LBs did perform very well this year.

If we lose him, can we hire Ken Norton Jr from USC?

:)
If we lose him, don't forget this name. Ricky Hunley. We've considered hiring him several times. He was let go by the Bengals.

I considered him and I'd rather have Dat get the job or the idea of Ken Norton Jr. is interesting for a variety of reasons.

So Herring would walk away from the time he has put in the NFL which counts toward an NFL pension and go to Auburn and the disaster that Chizik has walked into?

I don't see that happening but then again Herring has old ties to Auburn and Pat Dye. Pat Dye is once again very involved with the Auburn program behind the scenes now that Tubberville is out and the good ole boys are back in control.

I don't know players and former players have a big loyalty to their former schools more so than any loyalty to the NFL

I've also heard Herring's name pop up as a possible candidate for DC at Oklahoma State.

I've seen that as well. It was a scout.com article, I couldn't access.

That's an impressive bullet point on his resume.
At one time, Bill Belichick was let go by the Browns. All of these guys have struggles and setbacks. You're too smart a guy not to know that.

Yeah Hos, but getting fired by the Bengals whose had major struggles on defense doesn't give me warm and fuzzies about the man as a coaching candidate.

Granted, I had the same concerns about Reggie Herring, but it should definitely give a person pause before considering the person for a position.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Both were fired because they failed as head coaches. That is a different circumstance. And I think you both are two smart guys who should know that too.

Hunley was with the Bengals for five years and finally Lewis could not continue with him. I am sure he would get a look simply because he used to play for Phillips.
