UFC couldn't sign Fedor
Despite rumours and speculation that WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko was close to signing with the UFC, the deal is off.
According to UFC president Dana White, he made a big offer to Emelianenko and his management team at M-1 Global, but was not willing to co-promote with them.
"We tried everything that we could possibly do to get Fedor into the UFC -- we went above and beyond," White said on a media conference call. "We came to the table willing to give up just about anything, except the co-promotion. We offered him the most amazing deal -- I guarantee you he will not be offered another deal like this in mixed martial arts.
"I don't want to say anything bad about this guy. Listen, I went out there and tried to make this thing happen; I did everything I could possibly do. They didn't want to do it. For whatever reason, they didn't want to sign a deal with the UFC."
White wouldn't get into details about what co-promotion would have entailed, but said it was joke for M-1 to think they are in a position to help the UFC.
"Let me ask you a question; let's be honest here," White said. "These guys are going to come in and co-promote? How the hell are they going to co-promote anything? The UFC -- we've built this entire frigging industry.
"It's basically them coming in and saying, 'Hey, we've got this guy and some people might say he's the best heavyweight in the world. So for that, we want half of your business.' Yeah, okay. That **** probably works in Russia -- not here."
TITO ORTIZ TO FIGHT IN 2009
On the long list of things MMA fans thought they'd never see, White burying the hatchet with Tito Ortiz had to be right at the top. Yet, the two have made up and Ortiz is preparing for a return to the octagon by the year's end.
It almost seems like an appropriate conclusion to one of the strangest months in recent MMA history.
"I think time really cures everything," Ortiz said on the call. "Dana came to me and he was a man of his word; he apologized to me for the things he did. We're kind of like boyfriend and girlfriend -- of course with him being the girlfriend.
"For me, it was about competition. My fans deserve the best of Tito Ortiz. If I fought for Strikeforce, who was I going to fight? Renato (Babalu) Sobral? I'd crush his face. Frank Shamrock? It'd be the first death in mixed-martial-arts history."
White said he was happy to bring Ortiz back because the fans still want to watch him compete.
"Tito and I have literally put our differences aside and are ready to move forward," White said. "Tito Ortiz is still a guy the fans want to see fight. He just had back surgery and is getting back into training. He feels good and is ready to compete in the 205-pound division and take a shot at the title again.
"Tito is a guy that some people love and others love to hate, but people give a **** about him, so he's back."
White said Ortiz's first opponent may be Mark Coleman.
"Tito's not going to get an easy road," White said. "We're talking about him fighting Mark Coleman. Coleman just came off a war with Mauricio (Shogun) Rua in Ireland and then came back and beat Stephan Bonnar."
This announcement got an immediate response from Ortiz.
"This is the first for me to know," he said laughing. "Thanks, Dana. Now I've got my work cut out for me."
Ortiz said he feels great and will begin working with boxing trainer Freddie Roach on Monday. He pointed out that even when his back was in rough shape, he provided tough competition for the UFC's elite.
"I look at the past three UFC (light-heavyweight) champions. Forrest Griffin: I beat. Rashad Evans: I thought I beat but they called it a draw. (Lyoto) Machida: I gave him the best fight any fighter has until this point; I almost submitted him.
"Everyone in the light-heavyweight division better watch out because I'm coming and I want my title back."
