Rumor: Mortensen: Witten to retire **merged**

Witten was clearly the best TE on this team and was a good security blanket for Dak who likes good route runners who can get open. Witten was great in the redzone and knew how to find seams in the defense. He was one of our best chain movers. With Hanna and Witten retiring it’s a left the Cowboys in a tough spot. As for Dez I don’t see losing your best WR as addition by subtraction. Losing both Witten and Dez has left a couple of big holes on offense.

The reality is that roughly 18 teams in the NFL are bad, 4 are good, and then the other 10 can win the championship if everything goes right. Dallas is in that other 10. In the NFC, Philly, Minny and LA are legitimately good. Practically the entire rest of the conference could just as easily go 4-12 as 12-4. That means the conference is bad.

Dallas, if healthy, is going to have a good defense and be able to run the football. That gives them a shot against any team in the league.

You can only run so much before you have to throw, and them being healthy doesn't give them a shot against anybody.

If we're being realistic, if you're totally caught off-guard by the possibility of retirement with a 36-year old who posted bad production last year (and it's been getting worse and worse every year for 5 or 6 years now)... then you just aren't paying attention.

Literally the only explanation for us not seeing it coming is that we're just so used to players happily playing out their contracts when they're overpaid, so it never occurred to us someone might walk away from money he's no longer worth.

Someone at ESPN/ABC/Disney leaked it to Mort is what I think. It makes sense for a lot of reasons for them to do so and none at all for Witten or the Cowboys to do so.

WItten needs to think long and hard on whether or not he wants to work with people and an organization like that if that is indeed the case. Throwing your employees under the bus for ratings or the like is ********.

They just asked Jason Witten LAST WEEK about possibly retiring and he said "I plan on playing until 40..." or something along those lines. He should've been retired 2 years ago but he's still been out there. So yeah I can understand why people are caught off guard.

Watching “All or Nothing” on Amazon - at the end Garett gave Witten a gold football for his consecutive games played record. Witten really broke up making a speech - sounded like he was thinking retirement then.
Then Garret spoke about Witten and seemed as if he knew something then as well.
