I love Witten, but this is a total bush league move by him.

If he is retiring, I just want to say thank you Jason Witten for all that you've done. You've been an absolute class act for this team, and you have been my favorite player since I was in 5th grade. It's been a pleasure to have watched you over the years, and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. They just asked Jason Witten LAST WEEK about possibly retiring and he said "I plan on playing until 40..." or something along those lines. He should've been retired 2 years ago but he's still been out there. So yeah I can understand why people are caught off guard.

If he's at an age where retirement makes sense, it always has to be on your mind. That's how sports is. Just like the team doesn't tip their hand or give everyone a heads-up that they might be parting ways soon, you have to assume any player in his mid-30's could up and walk away tomorrow regardless of what he said yesterday.

Especially a sport like football where his next injury could be the one that keeps him hobbled or disabled for the rest of his days (unlike baseball, where if somebody gives you an unwise long-term contract, you can coast for years and rake in all that money you don't deserve anymore with relatively little risk).

It's known Witten has a great relationship with all of the Cowboys Brass. It also makes sense for a lot of reasons that they would want to keep it quiet until after the draft.

I don't believe that Witten would put the team in a bad position intentionally and wait until the 11th hour to have a surprise retirement sprung on them. We know the Cowboys lie and they have good reason to lie in this case.
