Rumors to Watch This Offseason
by Joe Rodriguez

We’re getting closer to the end as the season gets closer to the Super Bowl. Next week is the Senior Bowl, which typically kicks up draft talk another notch. In the meantime, let’s take a look at what Cowboys rumors we can expect this offseason. These are just predictions, some may happen, some may have no chance at happening; but, I’m throwing these out there for everyone to ponder.
(In no particular order or preference)

Roy Williams (SS) - Roy Williams will probably get released considering how much more cash flow cutting him will add to our free agency pool. I expect this one to happen pretty soon.

Marion Barber III - I fully expect trade rumors to run rampant the closer the draft gets here. As far fetched as it may seem, Jerry could pull the trigger on a trade to upgrade other areas if he so believes. There will be several teams looking for a solid back this offseason as the draft doesn’t have a great crop like last year. If Jones feels comfortable in Felix Jones and Tashard Choice taking the team over, then yes we could see a trade, nothing less than a 1st rounder though. We’ll see.

Terrell Owens - there’s a notion that we could see Owens released due to the fact that releasing Owens would not impact our cap much at all; in addition, it appears Garrett will be back as the OC, so if both are back expect an explosion of frustation from Owens especially early on. If we start where we ended this past season, then forget it, it’ll be a disaster. Owens wants to win like anyone else, but if cooler heads cannot prevail, something would need to change. Forget trading him, it’ll be the same at Philly, why trade when you can wait for an imminent release. He won’t be traded.

Brad Johnson - its just a matter of time before Johnson get’s his walking papers. He was a decent option 2 years ago, but after watching him last preseason, and this past season, he is past his playing years. He’s gone.

Kyle Kosier - surprised to see him on here? Not me, I was never a big Kosier fan, of the five lineman, he’s been the most average of the group, couple him next to Adams, and its even worse. Clearly Jerry isn’t going to let Adams go this year, but I expect a change at LG, either by free agency or by the draft. Don’t give me, the line suffered this year because Kosier was injured, yes that’s true, but even when healthy he’s still average amongst the other beasts, he’s totally upgradable.

Bobby Carpenter - Parcells and Phillips have either stunted his growth into oblivion or he flat out can’t play the position, I expect him to be traded to Miami, Saints, or Detroit. I don’t see him taking over that open slot. I loved the pick, but he never saw the field and got pidgeon-holed as a backup. He needs a fresh start bigtime.

Terence Newman - Another player that probably will be back, but the chance of him being traded is there. Two consecutive injury riddled season’s and he hasn’t been 100% the whole time means the car is breaking down doesn’t it? At 30, Newman can still play good, but only when healthy. A trade could happen here with Newman if Jerry feels good about Jenkins and Scandrick maning the corners, something the Cowboys need to happen soon, might as well move forward.

Newman and Barber aren't going any where. They just signed new contracts and it would kill our cap if they were traded.

A lot of people knock Kosier but the oline played so much better when he was playing. He's very underrated IMO.

Not surprised by any of this. I think Owens stays though, and Newman will be back since we lack depth at the position now that Pac is gone and Henry will either be cut or moved to safety.

Why not trade TO to the Raiders they need a number 1 receiver he wants the ball all the time. I know I may get bombed on here for suggesting it but it seems like a match made in hell. I feel that RW Miles Austin P. Crayton J Witt Felix Jones MB3 and T. Choice is enough fire power. We could trade him for a 5th and a conditional 6 th

I am not a huge Kosier fan, but when he went down, our OL couldnt block a crash test dummy

It's almost all bad. Not surprising since it's just a fan blog post from somewhere.

Player movement that might occur this offseason.

Roy Williams (SS) - good riddance....need to trade or cut to help team chemistry.

Marion Barber III (RB) - not sure I buy the trade bait talk here...very team oriented guy, think he stays....

Terrell Owens (WR) - Garrett and/or TO will be gone....many against TO due to his outspoken criticism and "me first" attitude. Cut to help team chemistry. Miles Austin to start opposite RW.

Brad Johnson (QB) - good riddance....QB will be drafted this year.

Kyle Kosier (OG) - he will be here next year...they need to get rid of Adams (he is living on past success -- he sucks)

Bobby Carpenter (LB) - might be traded to Denver or Miami...

Terence Newman (CB) - he isn't going anywhere, at least for another year...only issue is age and injuries...

Greg Ellis (LB) - biggest whinner on the team...need to trade or cut to help team chemistry.

Brooks Bollinger (QB) - he will get chance at backup role, but would not be surprised to see him cut.

Zach Thomas (LB) - retires...
Carlos Polk (LB) - cut for younger player

Jerry needs to get rid of the following coaches as well.
Brian Stewart - DC...
Ray Sherman - WR coach...sucks...
Hudson Houck - OL coach...lost his touch.

I hacutally had a dream about this. It was draft day and the Raiders were sitting there at the 7th pick with Michael Crabtree there. Jerry calls Davis and offers him TO, our 2nd, one of our 5th, and 7th and Davis jumps on the opportunity. Jerry picks Crabtree and in the Cowboys conference room is high fiving on TV. ESPN draft announcers are absolutly stunned and said that Jones should be placed in jail for highway robbery. Mel Kiper goes off on how dumb the Raiders organization is for this trade and said it was worse than the Herschel Walker trade. Kiper said that no matte waht the Cowboys do for the rest of the draft, he is giving them an A for this bold move and the Raiders an F for their stupidity. Then my alarm clock goes off and it was back to reality.

plus, Jerry would never do his role model Al Davis like that.

Can we trade TO to the Raiders for Michael Huff?

I'm surprised that Kosier gets the "savior" tag because our line sucked when he was out. I honestly don't think he is bad, but have to agree that an upgrade is very doable. When you put Cory Proctor in his place, I guess I could understand Kosiers ascension to diety status....but keep it in perspective: it was Proctor replacing him so the drop-off looked huge. Also, you might remember Gurode was a stud guard before being named center. I would advocate finding a center who could get the count right and snap a shotgun and move Gurode to LG. Kosier is undersized compared to the rest of the line and now battling chronic injuries. Start shopping.

Big dropoff when Kosier was out....he stays

See above post....he was replaced by Cory Proctor. Probably wouldn't have been much more of a drop-off if I replaced Kosier. Me thinks much more about Proctor's lack of ability than Kosiers prowess.

Carpenter is not going anywhere. He's cheap and he's a very good special team player. Doesn't make any sense to cut him if the Cowboys expect to improve the special teams. Particularly when they're saying they're not going to be big players in the free agent market.

Every bit as dumb as a lot of what the so called professional writers come up with.

And just to show that I am willing to pile on a blogger as well as a so called professional this guy
seems to forget that both Newman and Barber signed extensions so that ANY team that trades for them has to pay THOSE contracts.
