Run defense is still an issue

Even though Cowboys improved in amount of yards given up they still need to get better in run defense because they will face at least two teams that can run the ball with a QB that can throw the ball to compliment it instead of having 5 turnovers.

Front office should consider signing Star Lotulelei and beef up the middle like Eagles did with Suh & Joseph,

It's Star Lotulelei (Low-too-leh-lay) for PETE'S sake, get his name right or just stop butchering it ad nauseum.

And if Lotulelei is not available right now, what is the point of this thread????

We won live with it
The win was great, but that does not mean we are ready to beat really good teams with good QB’s.
We need to continue to get better against the run and get better and stronger at left guard. We are going to need run the ball vs tough D lines( Niners, TB, Philly).

We have beat good teams with great QB's even with our back up QB

I feel like we’ve made progress on the run defense. I think a few things have made it better (although this is anecdotally and may not be true):
  • Hankins as a 1Tech (obviously)
  • The introduction of Clark and the speed he brings
  • Sam Williams has improved on the edge. It seems like he’s shot out of a cannon on 1 or 2 plays a game and making a TFL
  • Micah seems to be stunting a bit more (and seems to regularly knife through and make tackles inside)
  • Blitzing the A/B gap with LVE rather than just two-gaping the DT’s and having LVE passively fill his gap was an interesting wrinkle against the colts
  • Kearse is a bit healthier and adds to the tackle game around the LOS.
  • Wilson is a missile being unleashed to attack the LOS both sacking and in the run game
I’m not sure the edge rushing has been any less aggressive though and we got done a bit on screens last game, but the last few weeks have been interesting IMO. It could just be we’ve been winning though and I’m just seeing things.

This is honestly going to be as good as it gets for the most part. Idk what your expecting at this point. But holding a top 3 rb under 100 is pretty good

The run defense struggled early on, but turned it up in the 2nd half and shut the Colts down.
You can't shut down everything every play. We dialed it up against the run knowing Matty Ice had melted.

The reason the game was close until the 4th quarter was due to their running game controlling the T. O.P. and helping the defense out. If it wasn’t for the poor QB play they would had more than 106 yards.

Colts 31:19
Cowboys 28:41

3 min in TOP lead is not that big a deal
Over a 60 min game it’s literally one 3 and out vs a drive that gets one first down

You do know 3 carries at 4.25 is a first down.
That's the old school math on running the football, but in todays game I don't think it holds the same weight as it did 20 years ago. This is great to evaluate a guy like Zeke. If he is getting 4-4.5 YPC he is destroying a defense typically. For home run hitters like the players mentioned I think you take 4.25 and be OK with that. These guys will all hit you a time or two each game with longer runs that will bump that YPC. None of these guys are really consistent 3-5 yard gainers who are going to churn out first down after first down averaging 4ish YPC. It's typically 12 yards here, 1 yard next carry, 2 the next.

JT was at 3.9YPC with a 19 yarder he ripped off
Barkley was at 3.5 with a 10 yard long
Cook was at 6.5 with a 17 yard long run

Not much damage was done to the Cowboys on the ground these games.

Hey Thunderpimp91,

Again, you have the best name on CZ. I'm a fan of what you're doing there, buddy.

Anyway, what you're saying is mostly true. A better measure though would be how many times the running game got the opponent into 3rd and 3 or better, and how the run game affected TOP.

That video was from a few years ago. The OP has posted it many times.

Unless kellen moore is your cordinator then its 2 run and an incomplete pass.

Really? Dallas is one of the top teams on 3rd down conversions. I know you want Moore to run it constantly, but then that is why he is an OC and you are a fan. Cowboys are moving the ball, one of the top teams in converting 3rd downs and when we get into the redzone Dallas ranks 3rd in the league. I think Moore may actually know what he is doing. Cowboys are also the 3rd highest scoring team in the league
