1992 - 31.250 running attempts per game
1993 - 30.625 running attempts per game
1994 - 34.375 running attempts per game
1995 - 30.937 running attempts per game
1996 - 29.687 running attempts per game

2009 - 26.181 running attempts per game

Jason Garrett is simply a 26 run per game guy... Consistent average since 2007....

I want those extra 4-5 carries...

I don't think 26 is all that bad of a number...it's just the timing of, types of runs, and lack of a consistent commitment to the run that is his downfall.

Don't you think the game has changed a bit since those days?

I mean, rules in the NFL have changed to favor scoring via the passing game, so I can see a dropoff in rushing attempts per game.

Can we stop with the 90's threads?

Different time, different league.

Parcells ran just as much as we did in the 90s. And when the Steelers won their first super bowl in the 2000s it was off the run game.

The lowest average for a super bowl champion in like the last decade has been 27.437 carries per game and that was indy...

and even in that year they didnt have what we have in the running back corps...

Super bowl winning teams are still running the rock 30 times per game.

Thats exactly it though. If you have a consistent commitment to the run, and identity of a team that is going to run 30x per game, it really changes the game. It takes a lot of pressure of the qb, tires the opposing defense, and gives your defense more time to rest, and most importantly keeps the opposing defense playing honest...

we have 3 great running backs... we need to use them.

someone posted that we are the most blitz team in the league, being blitz 50% of the time, where as the next closest team is 38% (or was it 28%, either way)

Remember when a shotgun formation would draw a bit of a gasp? Aikman didn't like using it, no? And that wasn't even that long ago.

These kind of stats need to be split by situations.

Total
Split by quarter
Split by quarter and score difference
And more that I don't want to type or want to propose how to sort.

Split by quarter should show higher amount of runs in the 1st and 3rd quarter, more passes in the 2nd, and the 4th Q depends on score.
If a team is consistently winning, the 4th Q will increase a team's run totals.
If a team is consistently losing, the 4th Q will lower their run totals.

How often were the teams in the 90s winning by the time the 4th Q arrived? How often were they losing? There's the source of your 4 carries: winning the first 3 quarters.

There are a lot of run blitzes called as well.

And one of the best run blocking full backs in Moose Johnston.

Dallas also has different QBs. Aikman could get into a rhythm on just a few pass attempts. Romo needs more pass attempts to be effective.

Barber + Jones + Choice...

all nice backs, none of them close to Emmitt

also, we have an ok OL, but nothing close to that 90's line

and, we have a good QB, but one thats nowhere close to #8

finally, it isnt the 90's...this team just isnt anywhere near that teams calibar, period

I would like to see them commit to running the ball more. But I don't see it happening. I'm just hoping for the best.

If they can just get on a roll, they have enough talent to go deep in the playoffs with this style of offense.
