3rd round tops. Mallett hasn't done anything in the NFL other than the aura of being drafted by the Pats and riding pine.

My question would be why the Pats would trade him if he's the eventual successor to Brady, who, at 37, is on his last legs.

Supposedly getting a 4th for him.

not a bad move for houston. not sure what they see in someone who's thrown 4 passes in 3 years but with the system and the "education" maybe he's ready to come off the bench after his gestation period.

OBrien was there when he was drafted, no? Smart move if he's familiar with him

Bill O’Brien drafted Mallett in the 3rd round when he was the Patriots OC in 2011. So there’s the connection.

So if he was drafted as a 3rd rounder and is being traded for a 4th, can we properly consider him a bust?

Mallett is exactly what O'Brian wants. A big, strong-armed prototypical QB. Plus he's familiar with him and probably likes the idea of a more developed guy coming in than a rookie.

*Edit: I see you got it.

Mallett sucks. If Houston gives up a 4th they are morons.

a bust? just because he didn't beat out Tom Brady in NE, he's a bust? It's a smart move for NE to get anything for him, since he becomes a free agent and they have no chance of re-signing him.

Generally, if a qb isn't challenging to be the starter by the third year, he's not that good.

But this would be the boring decision that Houston would make.

This has been rumored for s couple of months as a likely draft day trade.
