Generally, if a qb isn't challenging to be the starter by the third year, he's not that good.

But this would be the boring decision that Houston would make.

I think if they thought they had a future star, then he would be getting some series at times, yes.

Mallett is exactly what O'Brian wants. A big, strong-armed prototypical QB. Plus he's familiar with him and probably likes the idea of a more developed guy coming in than a rookie.
