Back in 2008 I told the members here about one of my neighbors. His name is Bill Lindskog, and he is a WWII veteran. I told people about how he was part of the D-Day Invasion. I got asked to ask him if he would share some of his memories. I posted this thread which are his words.

A couple of weeks ago Bill fell and hit his head. A guy riding by on a bicycle found him and Bill asked him to come get me. He was really wobbly and I insisted we get him to the hospital. They kept him for a couple of days then he was released to the Nursing Home where his wife Norma is a patient. She is blind and has Alzheimer's. Every day this amazing old man goes there to feed her every meal. For a couple of weeks he got to be her roomie again.

Friday I went and picked Bill up and got him home. He was so glad to be home.

Saturday he fell again. This time really bad. Some other neighbors came and got me again. I called the ambulance again.

I just got off the phone with the case worker at the hospital. It looks very grave. He has a skull fracture and bleeding on the brain. He is now intubated and breathing via a respirator.

Bill and Norma have no children. He has a niece in Chicago who can't get here because her Father, Bill's best friend, is also very ill. Bill and Warren (her father) married sisters.

I have been asked to be his Medical Power of Attorney and to go through his house looking for a Living Will, a will, Life Insurance information, and any other pertinent info to his last days on this earth. He's been my friend and someone I admire for a long time. If I am the one that has to say pull the plug it is going to really suck.

Our WWII veterans really are the greatest generation. The first time he fell he entertained those 4 firefighters until the ambulance got here. They all immediately loved the guy. He's that kind of man.

The fall Saturday was really bad. There is blood on the side of his car, the left front tire and a lot on the ground. I've been thinking I should go wash it off, but I can't make myself go back there yet.

In 5 minutes myself and a friend are going to search his place for the vital papers.

He is 92.

Man, that sucks. I hope you are not put in the position to make that decision. You have been a good friend to him and it sounds like both of your lives have been better by knowing each other.

Wow.

I found his cap, spyglass, compass, machete, and dog tags from when he was in the service. I found his discharge papers, including a letter signed by Harry Truman. He had original clippings from Stars and Stripes and other news sources about WWII. You can't even fathom how strange it is to look at a newspaper clipping with the date 1944 on it.

I found his service medals including 2 purple hearts.

I feel like I just traipsed through History.

Despite his trouble he's fortunate that someone kind is there for him.
God bless.

Sorry to hear the bad news Hos. That is a real bummer.

As usual, you are a good man.

Part of me wants to take some pictures of some of this stuff and post it for you, maybe scan some of his war pictures.

I have to go to the Hospital at some point to sign the papers, but I am officially as of now Power of Attorney for him and his wife since they have no other family here in Tucson.

I always knew the day would come that I would see him pass away, but I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would be so involved.

Hos, you care about people... it's one of the things I most admire about you... but of course, caring about people is often painful...

Just thank the Lord that you're able to be there for him...

Him,who'se name I am not allowed to spell on this site, has chosen you to take care of this hero, however that may end up being. It will be a true blessing for you both, although the blessings for you may not be realized for some time to come. Bless you....This hero is in capable hands, and I'm sure he knows it.

Hos

I get the feeling that when it's your time. And you close your eyes in this world for the last time. When you open them again in the next, someone will be their with his hand out and a smile on his face.

Just hang in there Hoss. Been where you are now; just do what is in your heart. This man lived a long good life; sadly you may be the one to close his eyes but remember how he lived, not how he died.
